Summary
Our Band 4 library assistant posts provide a front-line flexible, friendly and knowledgeable enquiries and circulation service to our diverse student, trainee and staff population. We are looking to recruit to two library assistant posts, one full-time (37.5 hours) covering our daytime opening and one part-time (25 hours) covering our afternoon and evening opening, Monday to Friday. There will also be a requirement to work one paid Saturday per month during term-time for four hours to cover our Saturday courses. As well as responsibility for day-to-day work at the enquiry/circulation desk, tasks also include assisting with the online reading lists system (KeyLinks), book and journal processing and some basic cataloguing. There will also be a focus on assisting with library projects with an immediate priority being a large project to make reading list materials fully accessible for our users.
• deliver a welcoming, efficient and sensitive front-line service in the library during our opening hours, acting as first point of contact to all visitors.
• instruct and assist Library patrons in the basic use of the Library’s physical and online resources and assisting with maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment
• use and query a variety of computer systems such as the Library management system, online reading list system and student course systems
• ensure security and safety of the Library and Library patrons including opening or closing the Library
• provide general administrative support and assistance to other Library staff for the online reading lists system, Keylinks
• manage very overdue notices including liaising with patrons and with Finance staff in Directorate of Education and Training
• check in new journal issues on serials module
• process new print and other media items
• assist with Library projects with an immediate project focussing on making PDF scanned documents on reading lists accessible for our disabled users using appropriate software
The Library is part of a larger professional services team working alongside the Digital Education Service and within our Division of Education and Training. We are a small team providing specialist physical and online collections in the psychological therapies, consulting to organisations and psychosocial approaches in social work. The Library is used by our clinical, teaching and research staff and our diverse mostly part-time student population who attend a range of courses from short CPD courses to long courses for Master's and doctoral qualifications.
