The duties of the Specialty doctor are those of a doctor functioning at the middle grade level within the department. Primary duties include the initial diagnosis, resuscitation and overall clinical management of all patients arriving to the A&E Department. Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with the University of Buckingham, is a University Teaching Hospital; we conduct research and teaching on site to improve the care of our patients. The hospital is undergoing significant investment, and we are proud to be rated good by the CQC. Visit our website to catch up on our latest news.

We have a busy A&E department that manages all medical, surgical and child health emergencies seeing over 90,000 patients a year. The Trauma Unit is a registered Level 2 Unit and the department deals with all emergencies. As our local population grows (current catchment is 300,000), we continue to develop our facilities.

Training grade doctors appointed to posts at MKUH have a wealth of education and training available to them on both a local and regional basis. This includes simulation sessions in our clinical skills and simulation facilities.

We also run a full programme of CPD opportunities for Consultants and SAS grades and have close links with Health Education Thames Valley for external educational opportunities. We have a vibrant SAS Drs Committee with a rolling programme of development.

For those wishing to take on a formal medical leadership role in the future, we are about to launch the ‘Aspiring Clinical Leaders programme’.

It is expected that you will supervise the junior doctors in the department whilst working on the “shop floor”, advising and reviewing their patients as necessary.

Clinical audit is well established in the Emergency Department and the Specialty doctor will be expected to take an active part in the process. The Clinical Audit Department along with ED Consultant staff are very happy to provide relevant support.

Specialty doctor will also be expected to take part in departmental research activities along with career grade Registrars and other senior medical staff.

Some clinical administrative duties will be delegated by the ED Consultants as required. This should be completed during support shifts. Guidance/supervision will be available from consultant staff as required.

Specialty doctor will be expected to play an active role in the teaching activities of the department. Current teaching programmes are run for middle grades, junior trainees, and Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs).
