Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) are looking to recruit a forward-thinking and motivated doctor to join our team delivering Acute Medicine services. These posts present an excellent opportunity for an experienced clinician with a good understanding of acute medicine to join our dynamic team committed to the delivery of the highest standard of care.

The Acute Medicine service is an integral part of the Trust’s Medicine Division, providing care for a range of acutely unwell patients across our Short Stay Unit, Acute Assessment Units and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan.

The successful applicants will join colleagues to continue the exciting developments improving the delivery of emergency care to these acutely unwell medical patients within the settings of the Emergency Floor.



We are seeking an enthusiastic individual to join and support our Acute Medicine department at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. The advertised position is full time and may require on-call commitments .

The successful applicant will undertake independent ward rounds and assist in the direct management of acutely unwell adult patients within A&E/Bryn Ward North.

The successful candidate will be encouraged to get involved in QIP/Audits and Teaching programme.

Candidate will have same educational and clinical supervision as in place for trainees.

The ideal candidate will have some experience working at middle grade level in Acute Medicine and is looking to improve their knowledge, skills and considering a career in Acute Medicine.

Full GMC registration with a licence to practice is essential for this role.

The role will require you to work across all areas of the Trust which includes those that are designated as positive, asymptomatic and negative COVID wards.

The candidate will be based entirely at Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.

The candidate will be supported by 8 Consultants in Acute Medicine, 2 Trust Middle Grades as well as good junior doctor support from FY1, FY2, GP, VTS and ACCS trainee.

The candidate will work across the Acute Medical areas – A&E, MAU (25 beds) Lowton Ward/MAU 2 (28 beds), Clinical Decision Ward (11 beds) and the Same Day Emergency Care area.

Planning and Organisational Duties

Undertake senior reviews as part of the daytime working rota with the Consultants and current Middle Grade doctors to ensure that ALL medical patients in the above areas receive a daily senior review in the morning.

Provide senior medical assessment and management in the Same Day Emergency Care area.

We will support the doctor in this role. Initially, following an induction / settling in period, they would be expected to be take part in on-call rota (Days, Nights and Weekends) but this would be reviewed after an initial “settling in” period at the discretion of the Clinical Director for Unscheduled Care

Support the junior doctors on the acute areas with ward jobs, discharges and practical procedures.

Undertake CPD activity in line with requirements for revalidation by the GMC.
