About the role:
Gentoo Homes is the private housebuilding arm of Gentoo Group that builds homes for sale throughout the North East. These sales generate a surplus, which is then reinvested back into the delivery of affordable homes. This includes building new homes for rent. We currently have an opportunity for an experienced results-focused Quantity Surveyor to join the team, based at our Doxford Park Sunderland head office.
We have ambitious growth plans, which involve the construction of 900 new affordable homes at an investment of £130 million. Our affordable homes plan involves building new estates in Sunderland delivering homes for Affordable Rent, Rent to Buy and Shared Ownership. We are a responsible builder who understands that property development isn’t just about constructing homes with a great specification in a sought-after location, but, creating modern, sustainable homes our customers and future generations will be proud to call their own.
We are looking for a values-driven, commercially orientated individual who will work collaboratively to ensure the effective management of all aspects of pre and post-contract Quantity Surveying with an emphasis on the cost management of new build housing developments. Who will ensure where required that developments undertaken by Gentoo Homes are effectively prioritised, financially and technically planned, managed and monitored.
The role is subject to a basic DBS paid for by Gentoo.

Work with the Head of Commercial and Commercial Manager in the financial aspects of Gentoo Homes’ Business Growth programme.
Apply a commercial approach to project delivery in terms of projected and outturn costs and profit.
Contribute towards the effective delivery and control of all aspects of pre and post-contract quantity surveying responsibilities relating to new build housing and mixed-use developments.
Produce accurate monthly CVR cost reports about Gentoo Homes’ Business Growth programme and all other development projects.
Establish, monitor and control effective procedures to ensure effective & accurate financial control & reportage of projects from inception to completion. With a focus on understanding the overall financial appraisal for designated schemes, and provide the relevant data for input monthly.
Management of sub-contract accounts. Timely and accurate assessments of applications including payment and pay less notices working toward final account agreements.
Provide technical and operational input and assistance where necessary in relation to any other construction initiatives undertaken by the Group.
Develop an understanding of the designated project in areas such as contract, specification and pricing ensuring compliance with conditions throughout
Monitor risk and opportunity schedules, managing risk from commencement to completion.
Work closely with the project team to monitor progress and its effect on margin along with delay identification.
Ensure good quality & accurate records are kept and maintained and company health and safety standards and procedures are followed.
What we are looking for:
A full UK driver's licence
Degree qualified or working towards qualification (preferable)
Demonstrable new build/construction experience in the role of a Quantity Surveyor
Working knowledge and awareness of new build housing procurement and construction
Proven experience in the development and implementation of effective construction-related financial resources.
Good knowledge of forms of contracts, cost plans and bills of quantities
Highly developed organisational, communication and negotiation skills
Proven working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, with Microsoft Excel at a proficient level, with the ability to adapt to new systems, i.e. cost management systems.
