The Service:

The youth service aim to improve the outcomes for young people aged 11-19 years and up to 25 years for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. We do this through information, advice and guidance, and a range of activities provided through our clubs and projects. We support vulnerable young people who are at risk or future risk of further problems such as substance misuse, youth offending, teenage pregnancy, domestic abuse and homelessness.

What is the role?

To be part of and co-ordinate a small team of detached (outreach) workers engaging with young people on the streets in and around the city of Portsmouth. This role is evening only (all weathers) between the hours of 6-9pm each shift.

You will be required to engage with young people through "detached" outreach sessions. You will visit each of our hotspot areas in Portsmouth, getting to know the young people you encounter, offering support and signposting to other agencies if required. We work directly with young people in the local area, this could be in the local parks, the seafront, on the street or shopping precincts.

You will also be required to "co-ordinate" the team by approving leave requests, constructing the rota and completing a monitoring form at the end of each shift, to document your findings.

Driving a small transit van is essential for this role, so you will need a full driving license of at least 2 years.

Who is the person?

You need to:

  1. Have excellent communication skills and be able to motivate and effectively engage young people, with the ability to converse at ease and provide advice in accurate spoken English.
  2. Have relevant experience of working with young people aged 11-19, preferably in a youth club or another informal setting.
  3. Be able to support staff and role model professional practice in all settings.
  4. Be able to identify issues, develop a plan of activities to meet young people's needs, and deliver and review the plan accordingly.
  5. Consult young people and be willing to involve them in service planning and delivery.
  6. Have good interpersonal skills, be motivated and able to work on own initiative and within a team in line with organisational policies.
  7. Be able to support the active participation of young people and their families, recognising the barriers to young people’s participation and working to reduce these, whilst ensuring that diversity and equality are instrumental in our service provision and delivery.
  8. Positively promote the youth service, its activities and young people through meetings as required.
  9. Identify partner agencies and work jointly to improve the offer to young people in the local area.
  10. Be able to make sound decisions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of young people, staff, and the wider community.
  11. Be committed to anti discriminatory practice and work in a non-judgemental way, whilst being open-minded to recognise and challenge inappropriateness in a young person's behaviour or language when necessary.
  12. Be flexible in your hours of work as you will need availability to work a minimum of three evenings per week and occasional weekends.
  13. Prepare for, and attend supervision, and appropriate training relevant to the post and team meetings as required.
  14. Lead debrief sessions with the team before submitting accurate monitoring data to the service manager(s) so that progress can be evidenced to partners and commissioners.

Please note that driving is essential for this role and therefore you must have a full clean UK driving licence.
