Summary
The NAC has close links to the UCL Centre for Amyloidosis and is part of the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The Centre maintains a longstanding high profile clinical and basic science research programme and serves as the national referral centre for patients with amyloidosis and inherited periodic fever (auto-inflammatory) syndromes http://www.ucl.ac.uk/medicine/amyloidosis.
A Clinical Fellow post is available based in the National Amyloidosis Centre (NAC) starting from February 2024 for 1-3 years. Systemic amyloidosis is a multisystem disease and the post is suitable for a junior doctor from a wide variety of specialties especially haematology but also from cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, or nephrology, background who wishes to gain experience in the diagnosis and management of amyloidosis.
The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust has around 900 beds on its Hampstead site and about 10,000 people are employed across the Trust.
As well as services for local people, such as accident and emergency service, and all branches of surgery and medicine, the trust is renowned for a large number of specialist services. These include, amongst others, haemophilia, solid organ transplantation, nephrology and hepatology, HIV and infectious diseases, plastic surgery, immunology, , ENT surgery and audiological medicine, amyloidosis and scleroderma. The Royal Free’s research priorities in collaboration with the medical school are translational and clinical research underpinned by a strong basic science. Areas of particular research excellence include organ failure and transplantation, haematology and oncology, immunity, and inflammation.
Amyloidosis lies within the Division of Infection, Immunity, Rare Diseases, which includes Haematology/Haemophilia and Rheumatology and is headed by Dr Parag Jasani, Divisional Clinical Director, Consultant Haematologist supported by Mr Louis Hackman as Divisional Director of Operations and Ms Elly Baker as Divisional Director of Nursing.
Non-clinical support services are largely devolved to divisional level within the new structure.
Amyloidosis is a multi-system disease that encompasses many specialties. The post holder will contribute to the delivery of the clinical services within the Centre (National Amyloidosis Centre and Cardiac MRI Department) and will contribute to the clinical research program within the Centre. The post holder will have many opportunities to gain experience in the diagnosis and assessment of multisystem disease including clinical assessment, specialist imaging and laboratory testing and use of new therapeutics. There is potential to and the candidate is encouraged to contribute to the centres clinical research in areas such as cardiac MRI scanning, proteomics, genetics, and clinical trials with novel agents in amyloidosis. The centre conducts a range of clinical trials in ATTR, AL and hereditary amyloidosis.
There would be potential for a enrolling for a PhD. If the successful candidate is a SpR with a National Training Number (NTN) s/he should apply prospectively to the JRCPTB to discuss any educational or clinical credit which may be achieved from the post.
