We are currently looking for an experienced Health Care Assistant to join our busy 17 bedded surgical ward on C14B at RBH. We look after a variety of patients with surgical diagnoses, including pre and post op care. Our patients can be quite complex with a variety of needs, with a lot requiring considerable nursing care.

General duties will include assisting patients to meet their hygiene needs both at the bedside and in the bathroom with showering etc, pressure area care and positional changes in patients who are unable to move themselves, giving out and collecting in meals to patients and assisting patients who need support to meet their nutritional requirements, working alongside a trained nurse to deliver a high standard of nursing care, carrying out physiological observations on patients and reporting any abnormalities to the RN.

At East Lancashire Hospitals Trust, our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care. We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 7,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

Providing a high standard of care to all our patients is of paramount importance. Being able to deliver care to a variety of patients with acute surgical conditions is vital.

Duties will include helping patients to meet their nutritional requirements through providing meals and hydration in a timely manner, ensuring patients are prepared for their meals, monitoring and recording nutritional intake on food record charts and fluid balance charts, following advice from dieticians and SLT.

Doing brew rounds throughout the shift. Assisting patients with their hygiene needs, promoting independence where possible but providing assistance as needed for patients who may be acutely unwell or post operative, aiming for a return to independence.

Promoting mobility, working alongside physiotherapists and occupational therapists to help patients recover well from surgery or a return to baseline.

Having an awareness of falls prevention and implementing strategies to reduce the number of falls and harm to patients.

Monitoring patients pressure areas to prevent deterioration in skin condition, working alongside the RN to provide pressure relief to those patients unable to maintain their own or to promote techniques for patients to manage their own where possible.

Assisting with the safe running of the ward alongside other members of the ward team to provide safe, personal and effective care to our patients.

You must be able to work under pressure, both within a team and using your own initiative. You must be flexible, punctual and hard working.

An understanding of the role and experience is preferable, but training will be provided. Working alongside a trained nurse to deliver safe, personal and effective care is the main responsibility but an enthusiasm to develop yourself within the role is desirable.

Further knowledge of basic life support, physiological measurement recording, safer handling and equality and diversity are all areas in which experience is preferable but training can be provided for the successful candidate. There will also be an opportunity to further develop your knowledge with learning skills like venepuncture and cannulation if desired.

Patients are the most important part of our work and caring for them to a high standard in a caring and safe environment is paramount. If you feel this could be you then please apply.
