Location: Duthie Park, Aberdeen

Duration: Permanent, Full Time

Aberdeen City Council is currently in discussions with Trade Unions regarding a proposal to move from a standard 37-hour full-time working week to a standard 35-hour full-time working week.   

Please note:  A decision has been reached, in consultation with our Trade Unions, that all new vacancies will be advertised on a maximum of 35 hours per week, and accordingly, new appointments made on a contract of 35 hours per week.

Roles that require PVG Membership

Please note that with effect from 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be required to meet the cost of the PVG membership. This applies only to roles with a full time equivalent salary of £30,000 and above. (Teaching roles and jobs at Grade 11 and above (currently £30,727 per annum / £15.97 per hour)

The Council will pay for the PVG membership cost initially, either £18 for existing PVG scheme members, or £59 for non-members, and this cost will be deducted from an employee’s first FULL month’s salary payment.

job purpose/about the role

To provide a professional horticultural service and support the development
of the Environmental Service through the management of greenspaces.
Identify, develop and manage projects including obtaining funding as appropriate and procurement of the works. Develop links and relationships with community groups/volunteers and individuals across the city and actively contribute to and assist in the creation, development, implementation and management of Environmental Services strategies, policies and initiatives pertaining to the post.

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:

Current UK Driving Licence

The postholder is able to demonstrate:

• An ability to project manage including creating specifications and tender documents
• Tendering procedures including use of Public Contract Scotland
• A proven ability to create links/develop and manage relationships with community
groups and organisations to encourage and promote partnership working.
• An ability to balance competing priorities whilst responding to customer demands and
completing work within agreed service deadlines.
• Delivering project outcomes to tight deadlines and within budget
• Use of financial and software packages
• Extensive knowledge of landscape and horticultural management techniques.
• Extensive knowledge of health and safety legislation particularly COSHH regulations.
• Financial and budgetary management and monitoring skills.
• An ability to prepare detailed strategies and service plans.
• An ability to prepare interpretative, educational and promotional material.
• An ability to work with and communicate landscape design concepts to the general
public.
• Developing systems and procedures
• Competently applying horticultural and grounds maintenance strategies and best
practice
• Communicating in both oral and written forms with a range of audiences including
individuals at all levels of the organisation
