Summary

As a development post the main duties of the job will vary depending on level of experience and skill. The expectation would be that the successful candidate will initially undertake band 6 responsibilities then after 18 months of support, training, development and experience they will be able to fulfil the competencies / responsibilities listed at Band 7 level to allow for permanent progression into this advanced paediatric physiotherapist role. Band 6 - Specialist Physiotherapist Demonstrate a broad knowledge of paediatric physiotherapy including neurological, cardio-respiratory and MSK knowledge Demonstrate an understanding of the cardio-pulmonary system and the pathophysiological impact on function. Provide comprehensive information in appropriate formats for patients, families / carers and other healthcare professionals to update recovery milestones. Be able to demonstrate high level communication strategies both verbal and non-verbal to ensure potentially sensitive and complex issues are communicated effectively to patients, families/carers and colleagues. Model positive attitude and behaviours towards clinical reasoning, critical thinking and learning and reflection in action. Supervise day to day caseload, peers and more junior staff. Identify need for service change using robust evidence Be an active member of the MDT Job Purpose To provide a high standard of physiotherapy care to a complex patient group in the cardiothoracic area. Senior posts are designed to consolidate and build on skills and academic knowledge gained during the first two years post-graduation allowing the physiotherapist an opportunity to spend longer in specific areas of work enabling further development of more specialist clinical and managerial competencies. Band 7 - Advanced physiotherapist Demonstrate advanced knowledge of evidence based cardio thoracic interactions and the physiological impact of these on physiotherapy interventions. Demonstrate a clear understanding of own needs and development for greater in-depth knowledge of a sub speciality within the cardiothoracic (for example but not limited to: ECMO, heart failure, neurological, developmental care, activity promotion, transition) Actively leads coordination of complex paediatric cardiothoracic caseloads, workload distribution, planning service needs and ensuring patient flow. Utilises evidence-based tools or strategies to measure, evaluate and review quality and effectiveness of cardiothoracic services. Actively seeks feedback from services users to aid service development. Leads by example and promotes a culture of patient safety and clinical effectiveness Actively promotes the role of physiotherapy within the cardio-thoracic speciality across the MDT Manages complex clinical cardiothoracic paediatric caseload, recognising the limits of own competence and professional scope of practice. Creates/fosters a positive environment and culture towards clinical reasoning, critical thinking and learning and reflection in action. Demonstrates advanced reasoning and critical thinking showing awareness and understanding of complex or confounding factors, synthesising information from multiple sources to make appropriate evidence-based judgements and or diagnoses Job Purpose To provide a high standard of physiotherapy assessment, treatment and advice to a highly complex and varied patient group, their carers and families, accessing acute Paediatric services.
