What makes Cotswold District Council a great place to work?
The Cotswolds is a great place to live, work and visit. Whilst the perception is that we’re all about chocolate box villages and beautiful countryside (they are an important part of our area!) we’re much more than that.
The Council is at the forefront of trying to improve some of the big issues that residents in our area face such as the cost-of-living crisis, access to affordable housing, response to climate change and developing a sustainable economy.
Our communities care passionately about their areas and making them even better we’re committed to doing our part to help them achieve this. We want to help communities to help themselves.
Our staff are our greatest asset and at Cotswold District Council you’ll be welcomed by a friendly team who are motivated by public service. Investment in our staff is important to us and we’re keen that all staff are able to develop themselves and their career.
If you enjoy a challenge, want to give something back and be at the heart of a hardworking team aiming to improve life for residents in the Cotswolds then read on!
What is the role?
The Council Leader provides leadership to the council and its political administration, with overall responsibility for the vision and corporate objectives of the organisation.
We’re looking for someone who will support the leader not only in his role as Leader of Cotswold District Council but also supporting him in his national role as Vice Chair of the Local Government Association (LGA).
Being close to the heart of decision making, you’ll ensure the Leader is well organised and briefed as he navigates the highs and lows of the political environment. This will require good humour, versatility and resilience as at times the role will be demanding.
You’ll also be the first point of contact for many residents trying to contact the Leader and affect change, so the right candidate needs to be passionate about our aim to make the area an even better place to live, while being patient and understanding.
What you will do:

Organise and manage the Leader’s diaries, emails, events and other correspondence.
Liaise with other staff members who need matters bringing to the Leader’s attention
Produce a ‘daily briefing’ for the Leader looking ahead and briefing him on the day’s meetings and events
Book travel arrangements and lodgings for the Leader, senior management and councillors and staff members
Attend meetings and report back with actions
Work with our communications team to organise the Leader’s media appearances and assist with social media content creation for Cotswold District Council
Manage projects and follow-up with team members where required
Provide cover for the CEO’s Executive Assistant when required

What you bring:
Experience in local government is not important, but you will be a fast and keen learner. Efficiency is more important than education, but if you are a motivated graduate that’s great too. Crucially you will have:

Exceptional organisational and diary management skills
High levels of flexibility and adaptability
Strong communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal
Excellent telephone manner
The ability to

multitask and prioritise an ever changing workload
work autonomously, under pressure, and meet deadlines

Problem-solving and decision-making skills
Be politically aware
Able to communicate with senior management, councillors and build relationships at all levels across the business and with external contacts
Strong ICT skills
Drafting, writing and research skills

The Package:

27 days paid annual leave (pro rata if you are working part time) plus bank holidays, which increases to 29 days after five years of service
In addition you will have an extra two volunteering days a year for you to support a charity of your choice
Renewed again for another year there is a Health cash plan giving you cash back on health, dental and eye care
