Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitable qualified Ophthalmologist to join our growing team in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

This post is for a fixed term of 12 months and will be based between our facilitates in Ormskirk and Southport.

As part of our trust's commitment to improving eye care in the area the successful candidate will have sessions in our new £2.5 million dedicated Eye Clinic within the grounds of Ormskirk Hospital when it opens in the the summer of 2025.

The post holder will be expected to lead on the improving our emergency eye care service and contributing to our outpatient and surgical activity plan.



The post is for a Full-time Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in Eye Urgent care and Cataract surgery.

The successful candidate will be joining a progressive department and would be supportive of proposals to extend the scope of facilities currently available.

Workload and clinic template is in line with Royal College guidance.

Consideration will be given for time off in lieu due to bank holidays. As our week weekends on calls end at 9pm, Time off in lieu is not usually required.

Our services:

Acute Care

Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.

Primary Care

Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.

Community Services

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.
