We are a small enthusiastic and hard-working team based at the Child Development Centre in the suburbs of Walsall. We provide a service for children between the ages of 0-19 years old, with a range of neurodevelopmental difficulties, complex physical disabilities or concerns around engagement within meaningful daily activities.
We work very closely within a supportive multi-disciplinary team and the role will involve providing support to children, young people, and their families across the borough of Walsall. This may involve working at your clinic base, local special schools, a child's home, mainstream schools or local pre-school settings, dependent on need.
The ideal candidates will have a strong team work ethic and sense of accountability accompanied by an ability to work under pressure at times. Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 286,700, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities. Work is also well underway on its multi-million pound new Urgent and Emergency Care Centre which will house a new Emergency Department (including Children’s Emergency Department), co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and Urgent Care Centre. This is scheduled for completion this year.

To provide responsive and accessible Occupational Therapy to children referred to the service, in the most appropriate environment, Child Development Centre, special school, mainstream school and other community settings for children aged 0-19.To work in close co-operation with designated Medical Consultants, Community Paediatricians, other health care professionals and staff from agencies such as Education & Social Care.
The successful applicant will be expected to undertake a clinical case load allocated by a senior occupational therapist. They will contribute the specialist skills of an occupational therapist to the multi-disciplinary assessment and treatment of children, maintaining a high standard of work. The applicant will also be expected to undertake joint assessments with senior colleagues and be able to provide written reports as appropriate, developing skills in the use of standardised assessments and the interpretation of the results. The applicant will work closely with other members of the occupational therapy staff and liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure effective provision of care. They will also be expected to work closely with clients and carers in the assessment and implementation of individual treatment programmes.
Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
• Degree in Occupational Therapy
• Registered as OT with HCPC
• Committment to Lifelong learning
Desirable criteria
• BAOT Membership
• Children and Young People's special interest group membership
• Post graduate attendance on child specific study days
Experience
Essential criteria
• Broad range of core clinical experience at pre-registration or, if applicable, post registration within the NHS or other UK health setting in a related OT clinical speciality e.g. learning disability, physical disability, social services etc, with the ability to transfer OT core skills to the OT process with children & young people
• Experience working in multi-disciplinary or multi agency teams, demonstrating an ability to be an effective member of the team, working flexibly to meet patient and service needs
• Demonstrates an ability to problem solve in a clinical setting
• Demonstrates experience of working with children (paid or voluntary role)
Desirable criteria
• Paediatric fieldwork experience at undergraduate level.
• Experience working with families who are adjusting to disability issues
• Experience of working in the community
• Experience leading/participating in workshops/lecturing
