Summary


Working closely with the ExecutiveDirector of Strategy, Transformation and Business Development, other members of the Executive Management Team and senior clinical, educational and corporate leads across the Trust the Director of Commercial will lead the business development, contract and performance functions of the Trust.

The Director of Commercial will be responsible for putting in place processes and systems to allow for the identification and securing of new streams of income. The six key areas of focus for the role are:

1. Leading with colleagues across education, training, consultancy and clinical services to identify new opportunities for service development and income generation.

2. Leadership on the Trust ambition to deliver a contemporary offer based on evidence and local, regional and national strategy objectives for service user, student and staff outcomes.

3. Leading on business development and the annual planning pipeline for new income

4. Leading on responding to tenders and matrix management of teams across the Trust to deliver successful bids.

5. Leading on delivery of the contracting function.

6. Working closely with the Managing Director for Clinical and Operational Services and Head of Informatics to deliver the Trust performance function.

In terms of contracts, the Director of Commercial will be responsible for negotiating the terms and conditions applicable to new and existing income streams.
• Develop and maintain business and market intelligence infrastructures in order to identify and realise opportunities to develop the Trust’s services, including identification and development of relationships with relevant stakeholders.
• Research, identify, evaluate and recommend new business opportunities; negotiate terms of acquisition; and, where appropriate, oversee implementation.
• Lead the Trust’s response to commercial tender opportunities, ensuring appropriate input from and collaboration with other Trust directorates.
• Develop and maintain short- and medium-term strategies for business development and income generation at the Trust, using horizon scanning to identify areas of potential service growth and areas at risk from competition.
• Support Executive Directors in developing business cases for development opportunities, setting out financial, workforce and other resource requirements, option appraisals and key risks (and mitigations).
• Support, and where appropriate, lead commercial discussions with external partners / potential partners.
• With the Chief Finance Officer, implement a clear process for developing, reviewing and maximising the profitability of Trust services.

We are seeking an experienced Commercial Director who will be responsible for planning, developing and implementing commercial strategies to support business development and build on Trust growth plans. The applicant will be an expert in NHS, higher education, training and consultancy service development and work in conjunction with senior managers, to deliver steady and sustainable financial growth for the Trust.

The role requires an entrepreneurial mindset, together with strong financial and marketing management skills, organisational abilities and interpersonal qualities. Success will be measured by how the Commercial Director can expand Trust services and generate revenue streams for sustainable financial growth.

This is an influential role with considerable responsibility and input into all aspects of the Trust growth and service development strategy and will lead by example to drive creativity and enthusiasm across the organisation.
