Summary
A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust.
Applications are invited for a fixed-term (12 months) Clinical Fellowship in Thyroid/General and Vascular Surgery. The department are looking to appoint an enthusiastic individual to join a forward thinking and proactive team of nine Consultants.
The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to experience a comprehensive spectrum of Thyroid/General and Vascular Surgery with the opportunity to also pursue a research topic of their interest. Surgical training will be provided in areas of total and para thyroid procedures, complex aortic open and endovascular surgery, general surgery and complex revascularisation bypass procedures.
The post will support the team across all areas of elective activity including inpatient theatres, day case and outpatient clinics with opportunity to participate in a dedicated vascular surgical on-call rota.
This post does not hold educational approval but is ideal for doctors who wish to pursue a career in Vascular Surgery. The post offers excellent opportunities to learn both clinical and practical skills.
Clinical components of role include supporting theThyroid, Vascular and General Surgical service.
across all areas of the service including inpatient and day case elective theatre sessions, emergency operating, outpatient clinics, MDT and daily ward round.
Applicants should have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in the NHS. Possession of the MRCS is desirable. Candidates should be eligible to work in the UK and hold full GMC Registration at the time of application.
The post is based at the Royal Derby Hospital, one of the newest hospitals in the country, providing state of the art facilities with access to a full range of excellent diagnostic and treatment facilities including a 9 theatre operating suite with 3 fully integrated laparoscopic theatres, 3 day case theatres and a robotic theatre suite.
In September 2022, a state-of-the-art Hybrid theatre suite was opened at Royal Derby Hospital. The £2.9 million theatre houses state-of-the-art equipment which allows clinicians to carry out more sophisticated, complex vascular and cardiology procedures. Theatre equipment, provided by Philips, is some of the newest, most advanced available and as such, the new theatre will be used as a training and reference centre for Philips – meaning healthcare professionals from across the country will be using this facility as a blueprint for other organisations to follow.

The appointees will work a 40 hour weekly programme with a mixed job plan to be agreed with the successful candidates prior to commencement. The provisional timetable consists of inpatient and day case elective theatre sessions, emergency operating, outpatient clinics, MDT and daily ward rounds, with the opportunity to participate in the dedicated vascular emergency on-call rota.
