Summary

Legal and Democratic Services are looking to appoint a qualified Solicitor or Barrister to undertake a caseload of contentious/litigious matters including but not exclusively limited to the following functions of the Council –Regulatory Services (including in respect of the local authorities Licensing responsibilities); Highways and Public Health, Town and Country Planning, Trading Standards, Environment, Social Services, Debt Recovery, Council Tax, Finance, Education, Corporate Matters (including FOI/EIR and Data Protection), and Crime and Disorder.

The post involves the provision of legal advice, research and advocacy primarily in the Magistrates Court but also in the Crown Court too. The successful candidate would also assist in dealing with civil law proceedings and would support the Principal Solicitor Litigation in the provision of legal services to Members and Officers of the Council

You must have proven legal experience as well as the ability to work with senior managers and partner organisations. If a Solicitor applicant, holding Higher Rights of audience – Criminal law would be desirable, but not essential, alternatively a willingness to undertake this qualification would be required. We would also need someone who is skilled and enthusiastic and with a strong sense of probity. Good IT skills and the ability to manage and prioritise large workloads and turn around work in short timescales are necessary. Finally proven experience in undertaking criminal law and regulatory work, or a commitment to learn and develop in those areas, including advocacy, would be essential qualities.
