Summary
**Support worker required for 1-1 support **
**Rate of pay: ** £14.50 per hour
The young lady in question has Downs Syndrome and Autism. Her communication is not straightforward but she has a good sense of fun and enjoys her time in this setting.
**Person Specification:**
* Patient
* Calm
* Kind
* Sociable
* Sympathetic
* Flexible and willing to learn.
* Attentive and observant.
* Ability to act as an advocate for the young lady in group activities while being sensitive to her need for time to respond for herself.
* We are looking for someone who will be an enabler for the young lady and who will learn to understand the young ladys ways of communicating and can patiently ensure that she is being listened to.
* Qualifications and Work Experience:
* Experience of working with people with special needs or in an educational setting with younger children will be useful.
* Interest in art, drama and music will be helpful.
* A knowledge of Makaton, or a willingness to learn some elementary signs, will be an advantage as the lady in question can respond better to a mixture of speech and sign language although her use of Makaton is not advanced.
**Job description:**
* The 1 to 1 support will take place in an art, drama and music workshop, working alongside her and helping her to access group activities.
* A successful applicant will need to engage with and cooperate with other staff in the setting.
* A successful applicant will need to be confident to monitor the young lady's responses to some social stimuli, as from time to time, she can become overwhelmed, and may then require guidance and intervention to ensure her actions are appropriate.
* The young lady does not have fluent language and has a greater understanding of what is said to her than the ability to express herself. She is still developing verbal skills.
* While the job does not involve personal care, there will need to be some reminders to wash hands or use sanitary towels etc. when required.
* Successful applicant will need to fit lunch and other breaks around the existing routine in the setting.
* There may need to be some supervision during break times.
**An Enhanced DBS check will be required. This is to check for any previous criminal records.**
**All relevant training/instruction will be provided. We plan to give a full briefing about the young lady covering her character, needs, interests and behaviors, as well as our expectations for this post, as part of the selection process.**
