Summary
One exciting opportunity have arisen to work within the Clinical Genetics & Genomics Laboratory (CGGL), based at the Royal Brompton Hospital, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. The Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Foundation Trust is the largest heart and lung centre in the UK and among the largest in Europe. We are a partnership of two specialist hospitals which are known throughout the world for our expertise, standard of care and research success.
The CGGL is a genomics diagnostic lab, providing state-of-the-art specialist cardiac and respiratory NGS-based genetic testing as part of the London South Genomics Laboratory Hub (LS GLH).
We are looking for a motivated Service Manager with extensive experience inassisting with the management of the day-to-day performance of the serviceand with excellent interpersonal skills,to join our team as Maternity cover for 9-12 months.
Applicants should have good computing skills, be capable of working under pressure to tight deadlines, and be able to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. They should have good organisational skills, be able to work methodically with great attention to detail and have a strong interest in driving and improving the quality of diagnostic services.
The CGGL is a UKAS-accredited medical laboratory, currently performing over 7000 diagnostic tests per annum and is also actively involved in research and teaching.
• Monitor the throughput and performance of all procedures carried out.
• Liaise with and maintain effective communication with referring clinicians, Clinical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors
• Monitor the CGGL group emails
• Build up and maintain a good understanding of the clinical genetics field, scientifically and commercially, nationally and internationally
• Have an active role in the service, research and development of the CGGL
• Engage with the RBHT Charity for fund-raising for CGGL
• Be responsible for the administrative side of staff recruitment and training
• Communicate complex information to Consultants and other grades of staff
• Be responsible for keeping staff informed of the introduction of new administrative procedures
• Maintain communication with users of the service
• Perform analytical and statistical analyses in order to capture activity and sample processing data
• Assist the Quality Manager in maintaining UKAS
• Be responsible for the acquisition, maintenance and use of equipment
• Monthly monitoring of income and expenditure investigating causes of variance
• Contribute to the annual programme of budget setting including the idenfication of cost pressures
• Prepare business plans, capital bids and any required tender documentation
• Monitoring of the laboratory inventory
• Review and perform costings for diagnostic test repertoire
• Liaise with the IT department for the acquisition of new IT equipment

The Clinical Genetics and Genomics Laboratory in the Royal Brompton has generated deep expertise in cardiovascular (CV) and respiratory genetics through a large programme of work over the last 7 years and has established infrastructure, expertise and variant repositories on site. The CGGL has developed sophisticated bioinformatic tools and pipelines for the analysis and reporting of different types of sequence data and is actively involved in research to develop new technologies. The diagnostic service collaborates closely with the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), Imperial College London.

• To oversee the day-to-day laboratory management and administrative processes.
• To monitor the administrative aspects of the service to ensure it is responsive to users’ needs in the medical genetics field.
• To assist with the management of the day-to-day performance of the service to deliver technical and analytical services that meet clinical requirements and that comply with the best laboratory practice taking into account safety and cost effectiveness.
• Assist the Head of the CGGL in putting together the annual budget and monitor the monthly departmental income and expenditure.
• Liaise with the RBHT Private Patient department to monitor monthly private patient invoicing and income.
• Assist the Quality Manager in the CGGL in maintaining ISO15189 accreditation with the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
• Monitor the monthly sample throughput and turnaround times in the laboratory.
• Act as the health and safety officer for CGGL.
• Manage the administrative procedures for the recruitment of new staff.
• Manage the purchasing of new laboratory and IT equipment and the ordering of consumables.
