Summary
The Birmingham Vascular Centre (BVC) was formed in April 2018 with the merger of vascular services in Birmingham. One of the largest units in the UK, we deliver a comprehensive vascular service across the whole of Birmingham and surrounding areas, covering a combined population of approximately 2.4million. The BVC network covers sites across Birmingham. The arterial site at Heartlands Hospital (HGS) has a consultant of the week on call rota delivering emergency vascular care. Spoke sites exist at City, Good Hope, Sandwell, Queen Elizabeth and Solihull Hospitals delivering outpatient, day case and ambulatory care. The appointee will be expected to work across all sites. Further support for patients with emergency vascular problems is provided at Birmingham Children's, Birmingham Women's and the Royal Orthopaedic Hospitals. A program of further development has been supported at Executive level to utilise existing resources and plan for a world class vascular service. The BVC provides access to a full range of vascular therapies for patients with vascular disease. There is a well-established service for both open and endovascular interventions for patients with aneurysmal and occlusive arterial disease. This includes an internationally recognised programme of endovascular surgery encompassing fenestrated and branched EVAR for complex aortic disease, supported by a hybrid operating theatre at the HGS site together with access to interventional radiology rooms, an open surgical theatre, a dedicated ward and a Vascular Enhanced Care Unit. Vascular laboratories are available across sites with plans to extend this service comprehensively. Clinics are set up to run as one stop facilities with ultrasound scanning available. Specialist nurse-led clinics for leg ulcers, small AAA and EVAR surveillance are held across all sites. The Heart of England Aortic Screening Programme delivers the national screening programme for Birmingham, Sandwell, Burton and South Staffordshire. There is a Diabetic foot service with weekly MDT clinics held in most hospitals. The vascular team work closely in these clinics and on the wards across all sites with Diabetologists, DNS, Specialist podiatrists and orthotists. There are strong links between community podiatry and MDT clinics.
