Apple harvester and farm husbandry. As an apple harvester you need to be physically fit, be able to pick apples gently from the tree with your hands placing them into a bucket which you wear in front of you on your shoulders. You will need to be able to carry this (approx 12KG) until full and carefully empty into apple bins in the orchard. You will need to be physically capable of doing this all day (approx 8-10 hours). This is a job equally available to men and women of all ages 16+ but it is dependent upon physical ability to do the job carefully and consistently. Rates of pay are the NMW as a minimum and include holiday pay and may also include piecework or bonuses for quality, productivity and completion of harvest. All work requires you to work in a team, as a team. We mostly work 6 days a week in harvest (approx 48 hours) and the work can be weather dependent. We try not to pick in the rain unless we have to as it bruises the fruit but you should have clothes for all seasons - wellington boots for the mornings and trainers for the drier warmer days as well as waterproofs. Even if it is dry, the trees and ground can be wet with dew. You need to be comfortable working outside in the orchards all day and you should bring food and water etc for you to have through the day. We stop for unpaid breaks in the morning (15 mins), lunchtime (30 mins), and afternoon (15 mins). We pay biweekly by bank transfer. Shared hostel style accommodation is available but is highly sought after so if you are applying from far away (but you must have a proven UK address or right to work in the UK), please make it clear that you need accommodation.
