Summary
Are you a policy professional with an ability to build strong working relationships with a range of stakeholders?
Do you want to be part of an energetic, innovative team and bring your skills to some of the government’s biggest priorities?
We’re looking for two Senior Policy Advisors who are flexible, intuitive and are looking to join a team working on a central priority for the Department.
The Logistics and Borders directorate (LAB), brings transport policy leadership on supply chains, freight, and passenger travel across borders together under one structure. The LAB team tackles a suite of complex and challenging issues of significance for the nation and its economy.
The Border Resilience and Response Team (BRR) within LAB is responsible for minimising the impact to supply chains and local communities when freight and passenger flows across the UK’s border with the EU (particularly the cross-Channel passage between the Kent and northern France coastlines) are disrupted. BRR leads on coordinating operational response to disruption, such as school holidays, adverse weather, and the introduction of border changes, by leading and maintaining the flow of intelligence between operational responders (e.g. local resilience forums), other government departments, and industry. BRR also plays an active role in strengthening existing local resilience plans through greater use of Government infrastructure, enhancements to compliance and enforcement, and by providing grant funding to local resilience forums.
BRR is a fast-paced and dynamic environment where you will have the opportunity to be part of a fantastic team creating and influencing the policy and delivery of some of the Government’s highest priorities.
We are expanding the BRR team in advance of a series of new border processes and import and export changes that will be implemented in the next year. We are recruiting two Senior Policy Advisors. The roles are varied and challenging, including line or activity management responsibility, mixing policy delivery with operational response to fast-moving and newsworthy disruption at borders and managing the impact to supply chains and passengers. This is an exciting opportunity to work at pace with Ministers, DfT’s Executive Committee, other government departments and external stakeholders directly involved in the changes.
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Preparing and drafting high-quality policy papers, briefings, submissions, and reports for Ministers, ExCo, the ‘centre’ (Cabinet Office, No.10 and HM Treasury), senior officials and other internal and external stakeholders, ensuring close attention to detail.
- Engaging and consulting with internal and external stakeholders to gather feedback and input on policy and operational delivery plans.
- Distilling multiple sources of data and information into tailored, crisp and will-argued advice to secure swift decisions from Ministers and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Working at pace and under pressure to meet tight deadlines and changing priorities.
- Providing support and assistance to other team members and contribute to the overall objectives and outcomes of the BRR team.
- Line management (where possible) of individuals to ensure team members are supported, stretched and reach their full potential.
- Supporting the delivery of the Department’s crisis response to ensure the free flow of goods and people across UK borders.
- Being part of the Borders Resilience and Response rota developing subject matter expertise (SME) on UK Border matters. This rota functions 24/7, 365 days per year, including out of hours, weekends, and all bank holidays.
