About the College/Department

Technical Services at the University of Derby underpins the key activities of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and innovation. As an applied University we value the importance of practical work and experimental learning. Our highly skilled Technicians from across all areas of the organisation have a vital part they play in delivering the very best student experience, developing research activity and contributing to innovation. Central to the success of our Technical Service is collaboration, teamwork and knowledge sharing through our TechNet.

Technical colleagues support a wide range of specialist resources across the College of Science and Engineering. Working independently and in collaboration with academics, our technicians play an important role in advancing the work in the Biomedical and Forensic Science Academic Discipline, supporting numerous specialist laboratories (including a new research facility due for completion Summer 2025 and a new teaching Superlab also due for completion Summer 2025).

Many of our highly skilled technical staff members hold PhDs and Degrees in disciplines associated with the specialisms they deliver. An increasing number of our technicians have been recognised for their contribution to teaching and student support as Fellows and Associate Fellows of Advance HE. A number also hold professional accreditation status through organisations such as the Science Council, which establishes knowledge, understanding and competence.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the management of Biomedical Science Research labs. This includes responsibility for running the Facility for Omics Research and also the responsibility for the procurement and installation of all equipment and consumables for three new Biomedical Science Research labs due for completion Summer 2025. Once the labs are established, you will be responsible for their day-to-day management e.g. training all researchers via lab inductions, supervising PhD students in the labs, carrying out research, applying for external funding for equipment, ensuring Health and Safety COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) assessments and protocols are up to date and adhered to by the researchers, ordering consumables and equipment, organising hazardous and offensive waste disposal, liaising with suppliers and service engineers etc.

Working closely with academics and members of technical team you will provide specialist support relating to research activities. You will be part of our technical team responsible for the maintenance, operation and health and safety of college equipment, working across several laboratories with a high degree of autonomy. You will be able to provide full technical support to post graduate students and staff including training and advice on the appropriate use of resources.

About You

The successful candidate should have a good degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline and have demonstrable experience of providing technical support in Biomedical Sciences in a Higher Education research environment. You will have knowledge and experience of using and maintaining equipment used in research, allied to biomedical science to be able to support students effectively. Knowledge and experience of working in cell culture and molecular research labs, and knowledge of all aspects of histology slide making, as well as teaching these techniques to researchers, is essential.
