Summary

Role Purpose

We are seeking a highly organised and experienced Head of External Communications to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and executing strategic external communication plans that align with the company's objectives and enhance its reputation.



The Head of External Communications will play a crucial role in managing and enhancing the company's image while establishing strong relationships with key stakeholders. In addition, they will also take a key role in managing reactive press enquiries on a broad range of issues to mitigate reputational impact.



Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Your job will be to protect and promote the positive reputation of the brand through integrated media campaigns as well as driving the implementation of the external comms strategy.



You'll:

-develop and implement strategic communication plans to promote the company's brand, products, and services to external stakeholders, including the media and political influencers

-lead and manage media activity, setting goals and prioritising tasks to deliver high quality press coverage in key titles that support Mitie's commercial interests and align with the company's objectives

-collaborate with internal teams, including marketing and internal communications to ensure that all external messaging is consistent, relevant, and on-brand

-create and execute effective messaging through press releases, media briefings, articles and other communications content, ensuring that the company's message resonates with target audiences

-monitor the external landscape and analyse media coverage, measuring the impact of the company's communication efforts, and refining strategies accordingly

-establish and maintain strong relationships with key media contacts, influencers, and industry experts to secure positive representation of the company across all platforms

-manage the company's existing media channels, ensuring timely and relevant updates, and exploring new channels to enhance visibility and engagement

-develop and oversee issues management ensuring the company is well-prepared to respond to potential issues, reacting quickly to capably manage complex journalist enquiries and potential issues at pace, including on an out of hours basis on occasion

-provide guidance and support to senior management on topics related to external communications, reputational risk, and stakeholder engagement

-be an advocate for the PR team, regularly reporting on the effectiveness of communication campaigns whilst also providing insights and recommendations for continuous improvement

-support the development of team members ensuring performance and motivation is maximised



Role holder will have

-have proven experience in a senior communications role with both media relations and public affairs experience

-exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling stories and messages for a variety of audiences

-strong leadership and management skills, with experience leading high-performing teams

-a deep understanding of media relations, digital communications, and the evolving media landscape

-analytical and creative thinking skills with the ability to develop innovative communication solutions to meet business objectives

-a well-developed network of media contacts

-experience in crisis and issues management, with the ability to make sound and timely decisions under pressure

-strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively

-excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and influence at all levels within and outside the organisation
