Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Research and Innovation Division at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust for a Band 7 Research Manager for the Observational & Supportive Care Research team.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and highly motivated individual to join the team. The role will include an exciting development for a flexible delivery team model. The research manager will also provide leadership management and support across the portfolio which will include observational studies, endocrinology, real-world data studies and our emerging cancer vaccines programmes. The post holder will play a key lead role in the development of an innovative flexible delivery team model designed to provide agile research delivery solutions across a range of research delivery teams. This will involve proactive and dynamic clinical trial portfolio management and coordination for performance and financial sustainability.

The Christie is one of Europe’s leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year. We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.

We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services. We are also an international leader in research, with world first breakthroughs for over 100 years.

We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year. Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning and Organisation

· Contribute to the strategic planning of observational and supportive care team projects and developments, identifying interdependencies across projects/functions, potential impacts on widerorganisation, resource requirements and building in contingency andadvising on necessaryadjustments.

· Contribute to the development of performance and governance strategies and support the development and implementation of improvement programmes, in accordance with local and Divisional priorities

· Contribute to development and achievement of short-, medium- and long-term business plans and objectives

· Organise and schedule research meetings, ensuring appropriate accommodation, attendance and distribution of papers, and that an agenda is agreed

· Coordinate, manage and monitor work flow within the observational and supportive care team in collaboration with RM/clinical leads

Policyand Service Development

· Contribute to the review of existing services to promote development of theobservational and supportive care teamservices

· Where appropriate develop operational procedures in collaboration with the quality assurance leads

· Support the directorate operational leads in service development plans to align with national and local strategic priorities

PerformanceManagement

· Contribute to the development and maintenance of the infrastructure to measure and monitor performance within the observational and supportive care team to ensure that performance is in line with key performance indicators

· Optimise working practices to maintain and continuously improve efficiencies within the observational and supportive care team in collaboration with key stakeholders

· Participate in the monitoring of compliance with all relevant standards

Business Planning and Financial Management

· Support the development and production of business plans for services/projects as required

· Analyse and interpret complex data in order to deliver well-presented information

· Support clinical leads and business planning to ensure targets are met to maximise income.

· Support the use of service line reporting to inform financial management

· Liaise with relevant stakeholders in the development of grant applications

Management and Leadership

· Direct line management responsibility for non-clinical staff within the observational and supportive care team including administrative workload allocation

· Provide leadership within the observational and supportive care team and act as a role model and resource for all team members

· Responsible for recruitment, retention, disciplinary and grievance, and all staffing management issues in accordance with relevant Trust policies

· Contribute to the delivery of training programmes

· Work collaboratively to identify and meet the learning needs ofobservational and supportive care teammembers

· Maintain own and professional development and identify learning needs and opportunities

InformationManagement

· Working collaboratively to ensure that all relevant internal and external stakeholders are provided with high-quality, timely, well-presented and relevant data reports supporting stakeholders in understanding operational efficiency, performance against national and local targets, activity and financial performance, and service size, configuration and potential for growth.

· Establish working practices to ensure data is accurately collated and maintained, including externally facing information e.g., web pages

· Ensure research outputs are communicated appropriately

Communication

· Communicate complex research information in written and oral format to internal and external parties

· Work, liaise and communicate with colleagues across the Trust, including service support areas to improve the delivery and quality of research and research services

· Where appropriate attendobservational and supportive care team meetings to present information.

· Represent the observational and supportive care team projects at national conferences and workshops, leading on presentations as required.

· Work collaboratively within all teams in the Division of Research to maintain and enhance partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, other NHS sites and academia.
