Orkney Islands Council Marine Services is the Statutory Harbour Authority for the port of Stromness Harbour on the Orkney mainland. Stromness Harbour provides lifeline ferry services to Scottish mainland ports and to the internal islands of Hoy and Graemsay, which operate to and from daily. The port is a popular cruise ship destination and is a busy port with marine renewables activities underway in Orkney waters. Local fishing fleet, commercial vessels, recreational vessels and coastal traffic all make for busy operational areas.
You will work under the line management on a day-to-day basis of the Pier Shift Supervisor.
You will assist in ensuring compliance by all stakeholders in the ports Safety Management System and associated emergency and operational plans and byelaws. You will be involved in daily log keeping of vessel movements, providing security, pier inspections, berth planning for vessels using the port, planned maintenance duties and reporting any defects to Marine Services.
Stromness Harbour is a very busy port and you will be required to ensure all port areas are kept in a clean and tidy condition and all pier equipment and fittings are kept in good, safe working order at all times.
In order to meet the challenges of this post you should have a working knowledge of port operations. You should have a forklift operator’s certificate, restricted vhf operators certificate (minimum) and training in Health & Safety such as IOSH working safely is desirable. You should have experience in working with the standard Microsoft applications such as word and excel.
You will be required to show and work under your own initiative and as part of the team to work within the operational procedures in place. A strong presence will be required within the port area at times to deal with the many demands placed in a busy port environment.
The post will be challenging within a busy port working environment but offers the chance to be involved in the new port activities and developments planned for a forward looking port authority.
You will work within a 12 hour shift rota completing 5 weeks of dayshift 0700-1900hrs within a 12 week repeating period. Shifts alternate weekly with one week on and one week off. Within each 12 week period there is a block of 3 consecutive weeks leave.
This post requires Basic Disclosure Scotland Clearance.
A full, current UK driving licence is essential.
