We are looking for someone to work as a member of the children’s therapy team undertaking highly skilled and specific therapy programmes to children in schools and in other community locations without the direct supervision or presence of a professionally qualified physiotherapist and occupational therapist.
It will involve:
• Implementing treatment programmes for children who require physiotherapy therapy and occupational therapy as required.
• Assisting with specialist equipment set up and use for children with special needs.
• Evaluating the progress of the delegated treatment programmes and provide appropriate advice to families, carers and school staff in a variety of settings.
• In conjunction with the therapists, organising and running clinics and groups.
• Undertaking related administrative duties taking responsibility for organising defined specific areas of work.

The small print

1. Communication and relationship skills
· Provide and receive complex information. Exchange condition related information with patients and relatives, who may have communication difficulties.
· To be able to independently encourage patients, families and school staff to engage in therapeutic activities.
2. Knowledge, training and experience
· To have knowledge and awareness of occupational therapy and physiotherapy and speech & language therapy.
· To be able to assist and lead group therapy.
· To have the knowledge to adapt treatment sessions whilst keeping within the prescribed boundaries in order to gain maximum cooperation from a child.
· To have some knowledge and skills in equipment used by children with special needs
· To have a thorough understanding of all red flags and know when to refer back to qualified practitioner.
3. Analytical and judgement skills
· To be able to evaluate patients’ responses during sessions and adapt therapy as necessary.
· Sometimes analyse the therapy’s effectiveness and report this back to each professional lead in relevant therapies on a regular basis.
4. Planning and organisational skills
· To be able to plan and prioritise patient caseloads and organise diaries and therapeutic activities.
· To be able to make short term adjustments to treatment plan liaising with qualified staff.
· To ensure consent is gained for all treatment.
· To be able to write within the medical notes and make suggestions to qualified staff to improve care.
5. Physical skills
· To be able to deliver therapeutic treatment by using a very broad spectrum of skills including, sensory skills, communication skills
6. Responsibility for patient / client care
· To implement holistic therapeutic treatment in one package of care using skills from all five professionals (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech & language, dietitian and podiatry) in line with the prescribed therapy care program.
· To be able to work independently in-patient homes and education settings but understand a clear pathway of responsibility back to qualified staff should the treatment plan need long term change.
7. Responsibility for policy and service development implementation
· To implement holistic therapeutic treatment in one package of care using skills from all five professionals (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech & language, dietitian and podiatry) in line with the prescribed therapy care program.
· To be able to work independently in-patient homes and education settings but understand a clear pathway of responsibility back to qualified staff should the treatment plan need long term change.
8. Responsibilities for financial and physical resources
· Be responsible for resources used for therapy
· Plan work effectively within resources available

9. Responsibilities for human resources (HR)
· To demonstrate own duties to other support workers and students and provides practical training to any level of staff if appropriate.
10. Responsibilities for information resources
· To update patient’s records and attend any meetings deemed necessary by the professional lead.
11. Responsibilities for research and development (R&D)
· Participate in any departmental audit and make suggestion on areas requiring audit.
12. Freedom to act
· To follow procedures and treatment policies often working alone, with supervision available at set intervals.
13. Physical effort (refer to effort factor questionnaire)
· To be able to use moderate effort over a full shift with appropriate breaks. This physical effort is required to assist to walk, stand or crawl plus other therapeutic activities. Some treatment happens on the floor and requires working at this level following the assessment.
14. Mental effort (refer to effort factor questionnaire)
· To be able to concentrate over a full shift with mainly predictable work patterns.
15. Emotional effort (refer to effort factor questionnaire)
· To be able to deal calmly and effectively with highly distressed families and children. Often working with children who have challenging behaviour. Occasionally working in unpleasant environments.
16. Working conditions (refer to effort factor questionnaire)
· Occasional exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions.
