Summary
The Science Directorate (SD) delivers high quality, high impact and highly relevant multidisciplinary science. Our people are diverse, talented, engaged and inspired to deliver innovative outcomes. The Science Strategy and Planning Department (SSP) provide strategic direction and support across this Directorate. The department has a wide breadth of supportive functions including project management and outbreak response.
The Relationship Management Team is responsible for supporting the wider directorate in the delivery of its science functions and commissioning and overseeing the work delivered by the agency on behalf of Defra, Welsh Government (WG), Scottish Government (SG) and Other Government Departments (OGD’s). Thus, ensuring these policy customers have access to the full range of expertise and services they require from APHA. You will maintain an overview of income and resource usage within the APHA science Directorate.
We are seeking a Science Relationship Manager to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to join the Relationship Management and Science, Strategy and Planning team to work in a varied role and be at the heart of science delivery across the breadth of animal, plant, and bee health.

The role will provide direct support to the Senior Relationship Manager and Lead Scientists and have line management responsibility for the Customer and Project Support (CAPS) Team . You will assist them in managing the WG and SG relationships, having oversight of the Directorate corporate income, resources and forecasting and advising on the capacity to undertake new work in future years (3 – 5 years)
Work with the senior APHA Science Relationship Manager and APHA Lead Scientists to build relationships with Defra staff with respect to work done in the science directorate. Identify new opportunities, future requirements and manage expectations. Working closely with the Agreements Manager, you will support the annual review of the Defra Commission and Scottish and Welsh Government SLA’s, Annexes and Surveillance Contracts from a science perspective. This will include seeking feedback on current service provision and working with the business to drive improvements.
You will capture and maintain a long-term horizon view of policy driven change to support effective planning. You will ensure that policy requirements are fully integrated into science delivery, research and surveillance programmes and will actively manage the expectations and requirements of policy customers.
At an operational level you will work closely with Project Managers, Heads of Departments (and their respective teams) and Lead Scientists to ensure that the science, pricing and contractual elements of proposals are brought together quickly and efficiently to ensure excellent service to the customer and that resources are available and co-ordinated to enable delivery.
Alert Directors/Senior Relationship Managers/Lead Scientists as appropriate to the customer perspective and any major changes in the external environment that might impact on our services.
