Summary
The Specialist Children’s Occupational Therapist contributes to the team leadership for the acute children’s occupational therapy (OT) service and supports the band 6 OT in providing child and family centred care in an acute inpatient setting. The post-holder is part of a multidisciplinary team for neonates, infants and children admitted to the general paediatric wards, Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, Winnicott Baby Unit (St Mary’s Hospital) and the Neonatal Unit (QCCH). The caseload predominantly consists of infants and children with complex needs following major illness, trauma, traumatic or preterm birth, and those with short-term needs following orthopaedic procedures and acute medical episodes. OT facilitates safe and timely discharge through early rehabilitation, and liaison with other agencies and services to promote smooth transitions between hospital and home, and between specialist and local services.
Led by the Clinical Lead Specialist OT, the Children’s Occupational Therapy team of 3.0wte staff, provides acute paediatric and neonatal services. The team is co-located with the acute children’s physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. As a senior member of the team, the post holder will provide training and support for junior staff and student OTs and participate in service evaluation and improvement, audit and research. The post holder will contribute to the delivery of teaching programmes to colleagues in OT and other professions.
The Specialist Children’s Occupational Therapist is an integral part of the multi-disciplinary team and supports the clinical lead in planning and delivery of highly specialist paediatric occupational therapy services to children and their family/carers, complying with Trust, professional and departmental standards of practice.
The post holder will provide aspirational clinical support to other therapists within the team and will ensure delivery of a service that is informed by best evidence and expert knowledge. They will support staff development from a clinical and non-clinical perspective, acting as a good role model, providing leadership, direction and support for junior staff and students. As a senior therapy lead, they will assist in and take leadership within agreed projects, including service improvements, evaluations and audits, within occupational therapy and as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.
