An exciting opportunity has come up in our Democratic Services team. If you have a track record in governance and would like to be involved in the decision-making and scrutiny processes, we want to hear from you. To be our Principal Democratic Services Officer, you will have knowledge of local authority constitutions and decision-making processes, along with experience of supporting and advising various committees.
About the Role
Erewash Borough Council is seeking a Principal Democratic Services Officer, to lead and deliver governance support to the local authority, working closely with the council’s elected Members and senior officers across all departments.
As part of our small and friendly team, you will be at the heart of local democracy. Leading a small team, the successful candidate will be expected to provide comprehensive support to the Council’s committees including the Council’s overview and scrutiny function, whilst building strong relationships with stakeholders both within and outside the organisation.
Key Responsibilities:
• Develop and implement efficient democratic processes.
• Enhance service delivery with innovative solutions.
• Manage complex and competing workloads.
Ideal Candidate Will Have:
• Extensive experience in democratic services within the public sector.
• Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate effectively, with sensitivity and diplomacy as required.
• Comprehensive knowledge of local government decision-making and modern committee management practices.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Appropriate qualifications in public administration or democratic services, such as the ADSO Diploma in Local Democracy, are highly regarded.
Additional Information
• Politically Restricted Post: This is a politically restricted post under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, which imposes limitations on the political activities of the post holder.
• Evening Meetings: You will be required to attend evening meetings (from 6.30 pm).
