Summary
The Science Team provides access to robust and relevant scientific advice and novel research for the development of policy, and the delivery and enforcement of product safety regulations across the OPSS remit, including toys, cosmetics, and new responsibilities in construction products. We work closely with other evidence teams including those in engineering, research, analysis, and testing. It is a multidisciplinary team covering specialisms including analytical chemistry, materials science, bioscience and toxicology. The team is also responsible for chemical risk assessment advice, leads the Office’s access to independent scientific experts in the space of chemicals and materials and works with others to deliver effective research and testing rooted in analytical chemistry.
In January 2024, OPSS published its first ever Science & Analysis review on GOV.UK that shows how OPSS draws from the best evidence in its mission to strengthen consumer confidence, to enable productive trade, and make the UK a world-class market for consumer products.
Working closely alongside the Science, Engineering, Technology, Analysis and Testing Teams in the Evidence Impact Area, the Research Hub ensures that OPSS has access to scientific evidence and advice for the development of policy, and the delivery and enforcement of product safety regulations. The role presents an opportunity to streamline the way we manage our research activity within OPSS, along with building relationships with potential stakeholders, who become delivery partners in our pursuit for further knowledge in regulation and its actors.
We are looking for someone who wants to:
Implement new ways of working and collaboration across our team, across the Evidence Impact Area, across OPSS, across the department, UK industry and beyond.
Work with multiple partners across government and beyond to ensure that our evidence outputs are robust, fit-for-purpose and quality assured.
Work with colleagues from a wide range of scientific and technical backgrounds.
Apply their experience of using scientific evidence to inform policy and/or regulatory activities.
If you think that this describes you then we’d love to hear from you!
