Summary
The St Andrew's Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns has been a Regional Centre since 1973. It comprises 3 plastic surgery wards and one paediatric surgical ward, which is shared with other disciplines in Broomfield Hospital.
There are designated Plastic Surgery theatres, including an emergency theatre, in the main operating theatre block of Broomfield Hospital. These theatres, the reception area and the recovery are all fully equipped with high quality equipment.
Although adjacent to the Broomfield Hospital operating theatres, the plastic surgery theatres are staffed and managed as a separate concern.
The purpose built Burns Centre was opened in 1998. There are 20 beds, comprising 4 large ITU rooms and 4 HDU rooms, which are thermally controlled, together with low dependency areas, one for adults and one
for children, each with eight beds. Patients are not transferred to other Plastic Surgery wards for rehabilitation.
General ward work, operating theatre and outpatients clinics.
Liaison with occupational therapists, physiotherapists, medical social workers,laboratory,X-Ray and photographic personnel.
Responsibility for the admission and primary care of all patients under Plastic Surgery Consultants.
Emergency admissions as they arrive when on call or on ward cover (approximately 2 sessions a week).
The dispatch of notification of discharge to General Practitioners on the day of discharge.
