Summary
The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) secures UK and global prosperity by promoting and financing international trade and investment, and championing free trade.
You will join the International Strategy and Trade Relations (ISTR) directorate. You will work in the EU Member States team, where we lead the department’s policy engagement with priority EU Member States at the bilateral level. Country Leads are responsible for developing strategies on trade policy and shaping the overall trading relationship with their market.
As Poland Country Lead, you will be responsible for our approach to bilateral trade with our thirteenth largest trading partner. You will become an expert on Poland’s overall approach to trade policy. You will work with other departments to understand the opportunities and challenges in our relationship. Additionally, you will design and implement strategies to tackle specific trade barriers.
Working across the department, you will develop creative ideas for how the UK and Poland could cooperate on some of the major trading challenges of our age, from advancing economic security to defending free trade. You will take project management responsibility for the overall work programme, updating senior stakeholders on priorities and progress.
We are an inclusive and tight-knit unit of just under 20. The team is friendly and supportive, seeking to put each member in a position to grow and succeed professionally.
You will be a proactive and energetic team-player. You will be confident in setting a vision, and then engaging a wide network of stakeholders to deliver on that vision.
Experience of policy work, especially on trade or Europe, is desirable but not essential. Far more important is your ability to think critically, your willingness to learn, and your desire to be innovative and enterprising in your approach.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing the UK’s approach to trade with Poland. Working with the British Embassy in Warsaw, you will design and implement strategies to grow our £30bn trading relationship.
- Tackling trade barriers and shaping the Polish market. For example, working across government, you will lead our collaboration with Poland on renewables, with the aim of aligning our regulatory frameworks to allow UK companies to participate in the market.
- Influencing EU policy using our bilateral relationships: Working with colleagues in the EU Services and Trade team, you will influence EU trade policy issues using DBT’s relationships with the Polish government (especially during their EU Presidency in 2025).
- Delivering set-piece UK-Poland bilateral events. Building on the successful UK-Poland Business, Trade and Investment Forum (2018 to today), you will project manage the UK’s main annual trade engagement with Poland.
- Briefing Ministers for engagements with Poland. You will lead on briefings for Ministers and senior officials with Polish counterparts. You will hold the relationship with the Polish Embassy in London to advance our priorities.
