Portsmouth City Council is committed to delivering excellent museums and visitor services which celebrate the heritage of the city. Portsmouth Museums is responsible for six museums and heritage sites across the city, one of which is The D-Day Story.
The D-Day Story is the only UK museum dedicated to telling the events of June 1944. D-Day and the Normandy landings remain the largest seaborne invasion in history and a turning point which marked the beginning of the end of the Second World War. Landing Craft Tank 7074 opened as part of the visitor experience at the museum in 2020 following an extensive restorative project conducted in partnership with the National Museum of the Royal Navy. LCT 7074 is the last surviving LCT which took part in the Normandy landings and carried up to ten tanks, men and supplies across the channel during the Normandy campaign.
Your new role
This role involves the successful coordination of volunteer activity for LCT 7074. You will promote and maximise usage of the LCT by the public, facilitating both an excellent visitor and volunteer experience. You will be an advocate for volunteering including training and coordinating a team of volunteers to assist members of the public when visiting the LCT.
You will enhance the visitor experience for the LCT and museum, by the delivery of events and activities to take place on-board as well as administering ticket sales and event bookings. You will also assist the D-Day Story Manager in the promotion of the LCT and museum to the general public to maximise usage throughout the year.
What you need to succeed
You will have knowledge and enthusiasm for museums and the wider cultural offer of the city. You will be someone who has excellent interpersonal skills and is able to communicate with a diverse range of people.
You will have experience of co-ordinating a team of volunteers and you will also have experience of delivering fun and engaging events and activities. You will also be experienced in enhancing the visitor experience and can demonstrate a commitment to this.
If you have experience of collecting and evaluating visitor satisfaction levels and managing small budgets and if you have a good knowledge of health and safety procedures and experience of carrying out risk assessments then we would love to hear from you!
Please also note that LCT 7074 is located outside and whilst the ship is undercover, this role will require prolonged periods of time welcoming visitors and carrying out other tasks in all weather conditions.
