Introduction to YSJ

York St John is an ambitious, modern university at the heart of historic York and there has never been a more exciting time to join us.

As one of the fastest growing universities in the U.K over recent years, we have a new strategy for the next decade, emphasising our commitment to widening opportunity through the power of education and contributing our talents to creating a fairer world, and a more prosperous region. We are putting inspirational learning and impactful research at the heart of this strategy, recognising our academic expertise as our greatest asset.

The Institute for Social Justice

The Institute for Social Justice was launched in 2020 to underpin York St John University’s mission to stand up for social justice. We do so through developing collaborative research and practice that seeks to identify, expose and address some of the inequalities, injustices and challenges facing society today. At its core the Institute seeks to work with people, with partners and with communities in a manner that sees participation, implementation and change as vital parts of its mission. The post is part of the ISJ Community Reserch Grants scheme.

The Role

This project is a collaboration between The Island and researchers at York St John University. The Island is a York-based charity that helps children and young people throughout the local area through mentoring and needs-led individual support. The aim of the project is to explore the impact that the organisation has had on the children and young people it has worked with to date, whilst developing a new approach to co-designed evaluation. As well as examining what clients have said about their experiences with the organisation so far, we will be developing a sustainable model for gathering feedback moving forwards, in a way that is accessible to young people and representative of their lived experience. The project will centre the voices of the children and young people at the heart of the service, thus we will strive for a participatory approach, which allows them to drive the direction of the work.

The research assistant will form a key part of the project team and will work closely with both the researchers from YSJ and staff from The Island. The role will involve data management and analysis, co-leading groups with young people, contributing to the co-authorship of publications, including public-facing documents as well as academic outputs, and data collection. There will also be responsibilities associated with research project management, such as organizing progress meetings, working with partners to create different outputs, and helping with event organization. Due to the nature of the project, there will be the opportunity to explore both qualitative and quantitative data, and to analyse this with the help of experienced researchers. There will be guidance and support from the wider project team throughout the role.

Required skills and experience

The research assistant will have a PhD (or nearing completion) in a relevant discipline (Psychology, Mental Health, CYP) or equivalent lived experience. It is vital that the individual has experience working closely with children and young people, ideally with those who are vulnerable or otherwise marginalised. They should have experience with both quantative and qualitative data analysis, as the project will take a mixed-methods approach. Experience of and knowledge about coproduction in research would be advantageous. Good organization and communication skills are essential. We especially encourage applications from those who may have lived experience related to the project focus.
