Summary
We are looking to expand our current Glaucoma Ophthalmic Technician team within the department to support a busy and well reputable ophthalmic department.
Main responsibilities are to assist the multidisciplinary team to provide an efficient and effective ophthalmic service. Duties include performing various ophthalmic investigations including visual field and acuity testing, eye pressure check which assesses the visual function of patients attending the eye clinic. The role also includes ocular imaging, supporting the day to day clinic activity within the Glaucoma department and leading the technician-led clinic independently. A key element is to assist medical teams in providing gold standard patient care. The role involves meeting and interacting with patients in a friendly and professional manner.
1.Testing and recording of visual acuity.
2.To carry out Humphrey Visual Field testing to a high standard, ensuring the individual needs of patients are met, maintaining the patients’ dignity and privacy, acting in the patients' best interests at all times.
3. Taking images using the Ocular Coherence Tomographer (OCT) and Non Mydriatic Fundus imaging.
4. To carry out such basic procedures as are delegated by trained members of staff and which have been taught, subsequently supervised and in which the ophthalmic technician has proved him or herself competent. These may include ORA, Icare, pachymetry, measurement of glasses using the focimeter and measuring a patient’s refractive status using an auto refractor.
5. To independently run a technician-led clinic for patients that requires glaucoma assessment and diagnostic tests.
6. To assist the acute and outpatient clinical teams with emergency patients, including setting/ clearing up the department. This will include flexible working days with both long and short shifts and cross - site working within the eye department at UHCW and St Cross Hospital.
7. To participate in skills training and assessment prior to undertaking additional roles.

1. To act at all times, as an ambassador for the Glaucoma Clinic to patients and their relatives, to colleagues and to other members of the public.
2. To act as a first line to resolve complaints by or on behalf of a patient’s relative or refers and appropriately escalates them to the Charge Nurse.
3. To raise patients concerns with the Charge Nurse or Doctor as appropriate and to check patient understanding where it is deemed to be necessary.
4. To accompany and support appropriate patients during transfer within the hospital as directed by the qualified staff.
5. To liaise with Orthoptic/Optometric/Photography/Nursing/Medical colleagues, reporting patient’s condition and progress within capabilities and to be aware of the need to inform qualified staff of any changes in the patient’s condition.
6. All staff must ensure they use resources in a manner consistent with organisational objectives and policies, ensuring that resources are realistic, justified and of clear benefit to the organisation.
7. Act as a role model to demonstrate clinical and administrative skills to more junior staff, including mentorship of new staff members
