Home, a place where you belong
We have a brilliant job opportunity for a Handy Person in the Newcastle area to look after, Simonside house, outreach properties and Shared homes for people with learning disabilities. You’ll be part of a small team but work with lots of different people in different properties every day. So never the same day twice!
We have an all hands to the pump attitude… so if another service has a problem and you can help then we’ll be happy for you to lend a hand elsewhere.
Typical day as a Handy Person
- One day you could be painting a room ready for a new person coming into the service, the next you could be putting up curtain rails and curtains for in customers homes, or even cutting down a shrub or two… weather permitting … where is that summer?
- Once you’ve settled in, you’ll be expected to manage your own week. People report jobs on the jobs log. You will be pretty good at prioritisation.
- Be ready to react to minor emergencies. Examples include, repairs to doors and locks, minor plumbing repairs like changing tap washers.
- A keen eye and hand for any internal decor, you will be a dab hand with a paintbrush.
- We do have a Home Group Repairs team, but having a handyperson in service makes life much easier for our customers if you get to them first.
Our teams
Enie, a keen fisherwoman, manages Simonside House and the dispersed properties and has been with Home group only little while but has worked with us for years so knows Home group very well. Her cat, Tiffles, a gorgeous black cat with white socks, thinks she’s a dog and loves to play fetch. Kirsty her next in line, has a bit of a menagerie, when it comes to animals and has green fingers. Show her a veggie and she’ll tell you exactly how to grow it.
Jackie, the Senior Service Manager with the support of Sue, Housing Management Coordinator looks after the learning disabilities properties in Newcastle. Jackie’s been with Home Group for 12 years, the longest she’s stayed anywhere cos she loves her job and loves when a plan comes together. Jackie has two crazy cocker spaniels, Harry and Daisy that she loves taking to the beach to chase seagulls. Sue has a beautiful silver Honda CB500 bike and enjoys a good rally at the weekends.
You Bring
- A team player with a can-do attitude, enthusiastic, and good organisation and prioritisation skills.
- Have an eye for detail and safe working.
- You’re multi skilled with general maintenance, know a bit about general repairs, carpentry, basic plumbing and get lots of satisfaction from cutting in with a Harris paint brush!
- Comfortable working and communicating with people from all walks of life.
- Able to use, or happy to learn to use, technology for essential eLearning and completing HR tasks such as submitting annual leave and mileage.
- It would be amazing if you have been a handy person in a previous job, but it’s not a deal breaker. Let us know your transferable skills in your cover note.
Due to limits on our current certificates of sponsorship, we are not able to offer sponsorship to external candidates for this role. This remains under regular review.
Job details
- Working 28 hours per week, 7-hour days, 4 days a week. Days and times can be agreed if successful.
- Based at our service at Simonside House one day a week, with 3 days out and about helping customers.
- Because you’ll be working around vulnerable people, you’ll need an adults and children DBS check done and we pay for that.
