This post offers the opportunity for a experienced Paediatric Occupational Therapist to work within a dynamic team. A broad range of community based experience is essential to provide clinical effective person centred and evidence based Occupational Therapy assessments and intervention to children.

Leaderships skills are essential to provide robust clinical support to a Team of Paediatric Occupational Therapists and Specialised Therapy Assistants.





The post holder will have responsibility for working alongside the service leads to support the development of clinical practice for Paediatric Occupational Therapy across the organisation by means of an innovative and collaborative approach to work related issues. They will act as a clinical expert utilising well-grounded academic skills to lead in the area, demonstrating advanced specialist skills and knowledge, whilst assuming professional responsibility and accountability in the assessment and treatment of patients within the paediatric Occupational Therapy service.

As an effective leader they will lead clinical developments in proactively moving the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service forward to the benefit of patients and staff within the Trust and at regional network level. Their role will epitomise the promotion and facilitation of good practice to ensure the delivery of high standard quality patient care. The role is primarily based in a community setting.

The therapist will take a major role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within the speciality who may have complex and/or chronic presentations and to determine clinical diagnosis and therapy treatment indicated and to maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.

Provide clinical leadership and professional guidance to Paediatric Occupational Therapy staff.

To act as Clinical Lead to a group of Occupational Therapy staff.

Communication and Relationships

To liaise with the local authority SEND teams to support assessment, advise and ensure compliance for children with SEND.

To represent the Paediatric Therapy Service and/or individual patients at the multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated multi-disciplinary service and integrate therapy treatment into the overall management programme.

To participate in Collaborative meetings as required, following Trust format.

To attend meetings with stakeholders as required.

To communicate with higher education establishments for planning and provision of student placements.

To communicate effectively with Line Manager(s).

Analytical and Judgement Skills

To provide interpretation of clinical findings, in complex cases, to formulate an accurate prognosis and recommend the best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans.

Lead on Tribunal requests and associated assessment for OT

Planning and Organisational Skills

Undertake a supporting role in planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service.

To ensure that the community Paediatric Occupational Therapy team’s performance is aligned to locally agreed Key Performance Indicators and that data and/or information are reported as required.

Physical Skills

The post holder will be responsible for your own transport as community visits to various locations are a requirement of the post.

Patient/Client care

To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work.

Assess patient understanding of treatment proposals, gain valid informed consent and have the capacity to work within a legal framework with patients who lack capacity to consent to treatment.

To work within the community Paediatric Therapies service to provide treatment and assessment to children/young people in a range of community settings.

To perform advanced Occupational Therapeutic assessments of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, to develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme to patients within the specialist area.

To formulate a prognosis and recommend the best course of intervention, developing comprehensive discharge plans.

To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out therapy duties, and to adhere to departmental policy, including competence to issue equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through, teaching, training and supervision of practice.

To complete appropriate clinical documentation in a timely fashion as required by Trust guidance and professional code of conduct

Provide written communication in the form of reports, assessment findings including giving expert advice on clinical findings.

Referral to other services as deemed clinically appropriate

Complete SEND documentation and reporting within in the designated time frames.

Provide legal reports on request

Policy and Service Development

To co-ordinate and ensure the effective delivery of the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Service.

To have a leading role in the development of knowledge, ideas and workplace practice within their specific service and work area

To train, supervise and performance-manage junior staff, this will include the use of formal appraisal documentation.

To measure competence of junior staff, students and volunteers through a standardised framework of clinical governance

To contribute to achieving targets within their clinical area.

To develop and review clinical pathways for Paediatric Occupational Therapy.

To support, advise and evaluate the implementation of policy and strategy for the Paediatric Therapy Service.

Champion and lead quality improvement initiatives across your immediate team and within your service, contributing to the Trust Quality Improvement programme.

Management and Leadership

Liaise daily with members of the Occupational Therapy team and the wider co-located Paediatric Therapies team.

To actively participate and lead in clinical supervision.

To be involved in the appraisals of junior staff involved in pathway delivery.

To operationally manage the workload of the team, understanding the unpredictability of the service.

To manage own diary and support other staff with day to day time management.

To oversee supervision and training of more junior staff and students.

To complete staff appraisals and clinical supervision activities.

To contribute to service and people development internally and externally

To participate in the clinical education of students

To provide specialist advice, teaching and training to other members of the multi-disciplinary team regarding the management of patients within the specialist area.

Regular liaison with other health, social care and education professions as part of the wider MDT.

To provide highly specialised training and education programmes to the wider health, education and social care community.

Attendance at relevant meetings with commissioners, represent the service in Collaborative meetings and participation in the SEND process, as deemed relevant by Line Manager

To actively participate in local and regional and departmental meetings.

To support the recruitment process.

To be involved in the co-ordination and authorisation of annual leave for the service within service guidelines.

To deputise for the Service Leads as required.
