The Department of Music is one of the largest in the UK, offering a very broad and diverse range of modules, all taught by expert scholars. We are ranked among the top Music departments in the UK for our teaching (placed 2nd in the Good University Guide 2024, and 6th in the Complete University Guide, 2022–23) and our research (ranked 1st in the UK for research including Music in the 2021 Research Excellence Framework). We also benefit from a vibrant creative campus community rated 14th in the world for Performing Arts (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024). The Department covers music across a thousand years of history but also explores the changing nature of music in the contemporary world. Through performance, composition and academic study, we challenge students to think about what music is today and why it matters.

The Department of Music has an extremely high level of Performance, both in campus music-making and also in student academic attainment, with resident ensembles including Choirs, Orchestras, Jazz Groups, and more. The Department has extensive practice and teaching facilities, and access to several excellent performance venues. The Music Department’s Graduate Fellow in Collaborative Piano contributes a vital aspect to our students’ experience of Music at Royal Holloway and we are recruiting for a new Graduate Fellow for 2024-25. The purpose of this role is to fulfil the majority of the Department’s requirements for accompanying singers and instrumentalists in classes, examinations and performance; coaching our students; gaining experience as a Graduate Fellow as a tutor and a working collaborative pianist; continuing training and professional development through tuition and guidance from Director of Performance; other opportunities as they arise. Our students vary from undergraduate through to postgraduate, all at an advanced level of music-making. The work takes place at the Royal Holloway campus in Egham and the Graduate Fellow has access to our practice/rehearsal spaces and well stocked library. The role is by nature a flexible position as requirements vary and the hours are spread through the two teaching terms and the third examination term.
