Job Title: Lawyer (Civil)

Overview

A Scottish Government Department is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Lawyer to join their team. As a Lawyer, you will have the opportunity to work on a range of interesting projects including Bills, primary and secondary legislation, and advisory work. You will be responsible for advising teams in the Scottish Government and National Records of Scotland (NRS) on a range of civil law matters. This includes advising on family law, contract law, damages, trusts, succession, prescription and limitation, and other private law issues.

Responsibilities

  • Provide focused and practical legal advice to the Scottish Government and NRS
  • Advise the Third Sector Unit on charity law
  • Advise NRS on registration of births, marriages, civil partnerships, and deaths, on the census, and on public records
  • Work on general civil and family law, with a focus on family law and NRS work
  • Work on other Bill and SSI work in the wider Division
  • Organise your own workload in a flexible way to manage risk and respond to competing priorities

Requirements

  • A sound understanding of public and administrative law in Scotland including confidence working with legislation
  • Ability to manage information and interpret data to enable you to make sound decisions and provide clear and high-quality legal advice
  • Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to build collaborative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, and to communicate complex issues effectively

Role:

  • Contract length: initial 6 months with possibility of extending for an additional period of up to 6 months
