Summary

The Scientific Computing Research Technology Platform (SCRTP) at the University of Warwick is seeking to expand its pool of permanent Senior Research Software Engineering (RSE) staff with a new position primarily focussed on supporting students and supervisors in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems (HetSys CDT).

The SCRTP is a well-established research facility at the University, providing advanced research computing support to departments across campus. This includes provision of a managed Linux desktop environment for research computing, large scale data storage facilities, and high-performance computing (HPC). We have a growing staff of Infrastructure Engineers, Research Software Specialists, Linux/Network/Storage Administrators and RSEs.

HetSys is an EPSRC-supported Centre for Doctoral Training which has recently secured renewed funding for 5 further cohorts of entry from 2024 onwards. It recruits students from across physical sciences, mathematics and engineering who enjoy using their mathematical skills and thinking flexibly to solve complex problems. By developing these skills, HetSys trains people to redefine current state-of-the-art in computational modelling of heterogeneous, ‘real world’ systems across a range of research themes such as nanoscale devices, new catalysts, superalloys, smart fluids, space plasmas etc. HetSys is built around a closely knit, highly collaborative team of academics spanning the science departments at Warwick. With its project partners HetSys develops talented, energetic PhD students to push boundaries in this exciting field. HetSys builds on Warwick's cross-departmental scientific computing research community and the Warwick Centre for Predictive Modelling.

Our RSEs provide an expertise pool in scientific software development, including implementation of algorithms, parallelisation and optimisation. As well as taking on extended secondments to funded projects, they play a significant role in the training of Warwick’s graduate student population via both formal academic modules and transferable skills training. Examples of recent courses include "Introduction to Scientific Computing”, “Accelerating Python” and “Introduction to Parallelism”. The role also involves some ad-hoc user support and troubleshooting related to scientific software development and deployment.
