Key Responsibilities To perform diagnostic gastroscopy and/or flexible sigmoidoscopy with a commitment if required to train in colonoscopy in the future To be a specialist nurse within endoscopic nursing environment and provide nursing expertise to all members of staff Assist senior sister with audit and service development requirements Clinical Responsibility Provide expert advice on all aspects of patient care, and advise on the use of highly specialized, technical and expensive Endoscopy equipment, through others where appropriate. To be responsible for the training and education of staff to ensure they are taught to use and maintain highly specialised, technical and expensive Endoscopy equipment thus ensuring the highest standards of care. Be responsible for patients in the Endoscopy Unit, delegating aspects of care to staff with the required competencies to undertake the required functions. Ensure a high standard of care is maintained by initiating and co-ordinating the assessment, intra-procedure care and evaluation of individual patient needs from admission to discharge Ensure agreed standards are met and initiate the evaluation and review of standards developed in the Endoscopy Department. Provide leadership that promotes an effective multi-disciplinary contribution to the provision of patient care. Promote health education within the Endoscopy Unit and be able to advise the patients and their relatives and others in health promotion issues. Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy and critical judgement Monitor standards of cleanliness and the patient environment within the clinical area Ensure compliance with policies, procedures and clinical guidelines for self and others. Liaise, report and document any relevant nursing/patient needs with other health care professionals with ongoing responsibility for patient care, communicating changes as they occur Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. Take responsibility for keeping up to date with advanced Endoscopy skills and be able to teach junior staff. Works within national requirements for Nurse Endoscopy as set out by JAG and the BSG Leadership and Staff Management Responsibility To demonstrate professional leadership and act as a role model. Be responsible for and lead a team of nurses to manage an Endoscopy procedure room, pre-admission or the recovery area Ensure the management of emergency cases oneself or by delegating the organisation to an appropriate nurse, organising patients to be transported from the main hospital wards and put on to appropriate lists for the management of their investigations. To act as a resource, supporting and motivating staff members To ensure all staff reach their full potential by enabling them to develop professional, clinical, and managerial and communication skills, which will be identified through the use of annual appraisal. Identifying individual development plans for junior staff. Ensure effective mentorship within the Endoscopy Unit. Actively encourage good practice and personal development. Promote an active learning environment for all grades of staff and students. To ensure that there is effective communication systems in place to allow staff to keep abreast of developments within the organisation. Ensure there is a teaching programme in place to teach learners the use of highly specialised technical and expensive Endoscopy equipment. Participate in teaching programmes for all the staff on the unit. Contribute significantly towards service or clinical projects, standard setting, audit and quality monitoring. To foster a culture of compassionate leadership and learning from mistakes. To be responsible for ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of patient records. Ensure that patients and their relatives have access to information that is current and allows them to make informed decisions about Endoscopy procedures and treatment. Respond to both verbal and written complaints in line with Trust Policy To participate in investigating accidents, incidents and complaints, implementing restorative actions where necessary, in accordance with Trust Policies.
