Summary
We are the Strategic Technologies team, working across several critical technologies that our crucial to the future prosperity of the UK; Future Telecoms, AI, Semiconductors and Quantum.
In the Strategic Technologies team, we seek to understand the barriers to growth facing our critical technology companies, work with partners across industry, DBT and Government to inform on and overcome those barriers, and making strategic interventions using the levers at DBTs disposal.
We sit at the heart of business engagement for HMG, actively seeking input from companies on their growth challenges and making sure their requirements are understood by the most relevant parts of HMG, and use our influence to ensure the growth agenda is reflected across the policy, diplomacy and regulatory activity undertaken across all of Government.
DBT also leverages the strength of its international network, with colleagues in 110 markets, and ensures the UK technology sector takes advantage of the opportunities in the global market, and promoting the UK sector to overseas investors and buyers.
The Strategic Technologies team consists of 15 individuals, and you will be joining a team continuously evolving to meet the needs of the UK technology sector. This is an exciting opportunity to balance business engagement, xWH stakeholder management and influencing, and hands-on trade and investment activity, ensuring every day is different.
The successful candidate will work closely with colleagues in the UK and overseas to develop and deliver on growth-focused activity, including export, investment and policy work, in line with DBT’s strategic objectives. This role will initially report into the SEO working on Semiconductor and Quantum activity and supporting international activity in India and APAC, but this may change as the business plan and sector priorities evolve.
Key activities include:
- Building an understanding of the technology sector, networking with UK businesses to understand their needs and develop the knowledge required to make informed strategic interventions and suggestions.
- Developing a network of contacts across industry and Whitehall, working collaboratively with teams in other departments to deliver activity.
- Working across DBT to coordinate, inform or lead activity which will maximise the growth of the UK technology sector.
- Contributing to strategic interventions to maximise the growth of the UK technology sector, working collaboratively with colleagues from across DBT and OGDs to ensure activity is value-add, non-duplicative, and undertaken by the appropriate teams with the necessary skillsets.
- Maintaining a strong relationship with our trade and investment colleagues overseas to keep abreast of growth opportunities for the UK tech sector through regular catch-up meetings.
- Where the most valuable lever for growth sits within DBT and our directorate, playing a significant role in the delivery of appropriate activity and interventions. This includes activity such as delivering domestic programmes around industry events such as London Tech Week, leading delegations of companies to strategic markets with growth opportunities, and working with DSIT to turn policy into commercial outcomes for the UK tech sector.
- When applicable, supporting the account management of existing and prospective technology investors from overseas that have a presence in the UK.
- Contributing to briefings for senior civil servants and ministers ahead of meetings and events.
