Your new Role

National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Central Carbon Team Leader to join our Environmental Sustainability Division within Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES). The Team Leader role is part of the Central Carbon Team, which is responsible for bringing together the activities National Highways is already taking to reduce and mitigate our carbon emissions, and the further future activities being identified to help meet the Government’s commitment to meet net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Net Zero Carbon and Environmental Sustainability Team also has the responsibility for advising and updating National Highways Executive Board on the progress of the Net Zero Carbon and Environmental Sustainability Strategy and the subsequent plan that will give the momentum in putting commitments and recommendations into action.

The Team Leader will be responsible for delivering the National Highways Net Zero Plan and will guide strategic decision making for implementation of the Net Zero Carbon Strategy by developing and preparing connect for a formal plan that supports the Strategy. This will also focus on the priorities and sets out the timeline to 2050. This role will need to consider and develop a programme of activities in the Plan that delivers the themes, content, actions, and recommendations of the strategy. The Plan must complement the company’s overall investment strategy set out in the government’s Road investment Strategy and National Highways Delivery Plan (RIS2 and RIS3).

Please note that this role can be based from any of our UK offices but travel to Birmingham, Guildford and Manchester to attend meetings will be required.

What you’ll lead on

Lead on the delivery of the Net Zero Carbon and Environmental Sustainability Plan.
Coordinating and directing the development of the Plan, ensuring the activities it sets out contribute to the overall goals of the Net Zero Carbon and Environmental Sustainability goals and findings/recommendations of the Strategy.
Responsible for ensuring our Net Zero Carbon and Environmental Sustainability Plan forms a consistent and coherent part of our plans for RIS3.
Responsible for ensuring our Net Zero Carbon and Environmental Sustainability Plan is consistent with the Government’s net zero carbon strategy and other green recovery initiatives.
Provide advice and support discussions with National Highways Board and Executive with the delivery of the plan.]
Build and maintain appropriate engagement at all levels with internal and external stakeholders.
Provide support to the Head of Carbon and Environmental Sustainability Strategy and Planning and Director of Carbon and Environmental Sustainability, as required.

To be successful

Qualification in Environmental sustainability or related experience and or knowledge of carbon management / greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions / carbon foot printing, environmental sustainability principles and net zero issues.
Ability to utilise strategic thinking to ensure our plans are practical and consistent with the overall direction set for the company.
Leadership skills and the ability to set direction, including defining clear requirements of others and ensuring high quality deliverables.
Experience of working with technical consultancies is desirable.
Understanding and using complex information: analytical, financial and technical.
Ability to quality check reports, spot gaps in information and make linkages and connections between initiatives, programmes and work effort.
