Your new role

National Highways have an excellent opportunity for a Project Manager to join our Central Carbon team within Environmental Sustainability Division in Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES). The Project Manager role is part of the Central Carbon Team, which is responsible for bringing together the activities National Highways is already taking to reduce and mitigate our carbon emissions, and the further future activities being identified to help meet the Government’s commitment to meet net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Central Carbon Team are also responsible for advising and updating National Highways Executive and Board on the progress of the Net Zero Plan.

The Central Carbon Project Manager will be responsible for delivering and maintaining a programme plan, which is adaptable and flexible as the work evolves. The Project Manager will also be responsible for using that programme plan to progress, monitor and control delivery to ensure we deliver the Net Zero Plan and refine it over Road Period 2 and beyond.

Please note that this position can be based from any of our UK offices but occasional travel to Bristol, Birmingham, Guildford, Manchester and other key offices to attend meetings may be required.

What you’ll be leading on

Leading the Net Zero Carbon work activities using appropriate project management skills and tools. Accurate reporting of progress through reports, dashboards and stage reviews as appropriate.
Undertake monthly forecasting of project financials and report on performance to provide a clear view of the progress of projects.
Manage project performance and outcomes and challenge project delivery against milestones, having delegated responsibility for projects so that the project is delivered to time, cost and quality objectives.
Lead on the preparation, review and quality assurance of Net Zero documentation, presentations and papers to ensure that they are fit for purpose.
Plan and prioritise assigned work to ensure timely delivery and effective utilisation of resources.
Identification and evaluation of risks, issues, dependencies and constraints associated with the Net Zero Plan, escalating where appropriate. Where necessary, develop, agree and implement solutions to overcome these.

To be successful

A certification/qualification in project management (e.g. Project Management Professional (PMP), PRINCE Practitioner, Certified Project Management Practitioner, CPMP) and/or a track record of successful roles in this field or similar.
Ability to work collaboratively, with a range of colleagues, subject matter experts and business partners both in the wider organisation and externally across multiple stakeholders and delivery partners.
Good interpersonal, oral communication and presentation skills to build and sustain effective communications with both internal and external customers and stakeholders.
Experience of working successfully in a programme or project management environment, with proven application of project management approaches to achieve project/programme delivery
Strong organisational management, proactive approach and ability to work on own initiative and prioritise to manage and deliver its own projects and meet tight deadlines.
Working knowledge of carbon and basic technical awareness to understand the different areas of the business and be able to contribute to the development and improvement of the network is desirable.
