Summary
Act as receptionist in Pathology reception, receiving visitors and patients, dealing with enquiries and ensuring that printed results are sent to requesters at an acceptable rate. Ensure patients, members of the public and Trust and external healthcare staff are given the correct protocols for any test required and that they understand what is required. Receive all types of specimens e.g., blood, urine, faeces etc. for laboratory investigation. Histology samples from theatre must be carefully checked to ensure they are correct and must be signed for in the theatre book. To check patient identification on samples/request cards and attach laboratory numbers (or bar codes) as appropriate. To be responsible for the initial investigation of mislabelled or missing samples and report inadequate samples to qualified laboratory staff. Ensure all mismatched requests are carefully logged according to quality standards. Measure out and aliquot 24hr urine samples. Ensure samples for referral are correctly prepared, ensuring that the aliquot is appropriately labelled. Prepare 24hr urine containers with appropriate preservatives, ensuring log is correctly filled in to comply with health and safety guidelines. Keep work surfaces, fridges, freezers and centrifuges clean and tidy and carry out appropriate disinfection procedures according to protocols and keep a log of this activity. To investigate temperature alarms from the Tutela system relating to the fridge/freezers within PSU. Entering findings into the system and correcting the issue with the fridge/freezer. Take appropriate action to ensure the integrity of samples/reagents stored within. Maintain stocks of consumables and reagents and keep inventory. Data entry of patient information and details of sample requests into the laboratory computer system, ensuring that the computer record is updated when necessary e.g. change of address etc. Deal with telephone enquiries. This could be providing advice on sample requirements, bottle requirements etc. If for results ensuring the caller is entitled them, passing on enquiries to BMS (biomedical scientist) staff where appropriate & giving out authorised results to medical & nursing staff.
