About Us
West Sussex Youth Justice Service (YJS) is a high performing multi-agency statutory partnership which provides services before and after court to meet the statutory requirements of the youth justice system. Its primary aim is to prevent offending and reduce reoffending by children. The service works in partnership with a variety of agencies to ensure children are offered appropriate intervention to address their risks, meet their needs and build on their strengths. Further, the service seeks to repair the harm caused to victims and communities by addressing the root causes of offending and reoffending by children.

About the Role
Salary: £30,296 to £33,024
Working Pattern: Full Time, 37 hours per week.
Contract Length: Permanent
Location: Countywide with hybrid and flexible working.
As a Restorative Justice Advisor, you will be passionate about giving victims of youth crime a voice, and creating opportunities for children involved in the youth justice system to repair the harm caused by their offending behaviour. You will be responsible for coordinating the offer and delivery of all restorative processes to victims linked to youth crime. You will be motivated to work with both complex and vulnerable children and the victims of their offending to create a safe environment where everyone can have a voice and you can facilitate the best outcomes for everyone.
We are looking for people who can display empathy, have strong communication skills and the ability to enable others to communicate with each other such as mediation skills. You will have understanding of attachment and developmental trauma, child development and the victim recovery model to effectively engage both children and victims. Good assessment skills and being able to respond independently and effectively to resolve problems and situations as they arise will be key. You will be able to demonstrate strong emotional resilience and practice, as well as upskilling and supporting the wider YJS service to manage and embed restorative practices.
You will value multi-agency working, such as developing partnerships with police, children's homes, schools and other agencies which may include delivery of workshops around raising their restorative practice awareness and skills, and facilitating restorative justice conferences. Working closely with the Reparation staff to cultivate and develop projects and opportunities with community groups, charities and non-profit organisations will be instrumental in ensuring children have a variety of avenues to make a positive impact and foster a future within their communities.
About You
Just some of the skills and experience you will need include:
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to explain information to others and use advisory, negotiation and persuasion skills to influence the actions of others.
- Able to gain trust and respect, and work in partnership with victims, young people, parents, carers, colleagues and external agencies to deliver an effective service, and work creatively and sensitively in a problem-solving way.
- Able to research, assess, analyse and interpret information and data from varying sources, prioritise needs and identify strengths, to effectively formulate collaborative plans for restorative intervention and service provision, including the voice of victims, children and families.
- Able to act in an appropriate manner, with discretion, whilst hearing confidential, sensitive or disturbing information.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise your workload.
- Ability to design, deliver and evaluate Restorative Practice training packages / workshops.
- Degree level qualification, or equivalent qualification, in a relevant field, for example, psychology, child/social care, youth work or criminology, or equivalent demonstrable experience of working within these fields with a good theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge of the theory and principles of restorative justice.
- National Accreditation Level 4 in Restorative Justice or a commitment to achieve once in post.
- Experience of training, teaching, presenting and/or facilitating groups.
- Experience of delivering Restorative conferences.
- Experience of writing reports to a high standard.
