Summary
The Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a substantive consultant in Obstetrics with a special interest in maternal medicine. This is a substantive post that contributes to a 98-hour consultant presence on the Delivery Suite, improves the high-risk antenatal care service and increases access to postnatal reviews. This post will also contribute towards clinical leadership as detailed in recent national reports on maternity services in the UK. We have recently seen an increase in the acuity as well as numbers of our deliveries from approximately 5000 to almost 6000 predicted, and there is a possibility that we may need to expand still further. There will also be scope within the role to provide an oversight for clinical governance in obstetrics.
The post holder will be expected to work collaboratively with the other consultants within Homerton O & G, Neonatal and Fertility services and with other disciplines involved in the management of patients. The department is committed to continue improvement of the service and the new Consultants will therefore be fully involved in service planning and development issues and will be expected to take an active role in the management of the service,as well contributing to the overall key performance indicators for activity and patient experience
The successful applicant will be involved in the training of junior doctors and or nursing /midwiferystaff in areas of expertise.
The post holder is expected to understand the changing policies and NHS structures in the Northeast London and North Central London and contribute to pathway redesigns and or lead on new ways of working within the service. The post holder is expected to work closely with the clinical lead to have a positive impact on the appointment and treatment waiting times.
The post holder is expected to understand the regulations associated with the maternity services and will ideally have an experience of the CQC and CNST inspection process, and or other regulatory / professional inspection frameworks.

• The appointee will have a special interest in Maternal medicine and High-risk obstetrics. There will be a weekly caesarean section list and as needed a postnatal debrief session.
• The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital. Research activity will be encouraged. Specifically, the post holder would be expected to be part of the PROMPT faculty and would be supported to be a trainer.
• The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the service within the directorate. The appointee will be expected to take part in the management and routine administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, running of clinical departments and the supervision of junior medical staff and specialist nurses/midwives. In addition, he or she will be expected to adopt an active role in the wider management arena within the directorate where appropriate.
• The department has a strong focus on clinical audit and clinical risk management and there are regular clinical audit meetings and case review meetings which the appointee will be expected to attend and or lead when possible.
• The Trust is committed to developing a clear approach to clinical governance and the post holder will be expected to play a key role in this area, participating in the development and implementation of specific initiatives when appropriate.
• The Trust is committed to implementing the new deal and EWTD for junior doctors, particularly on junior doctors’ hours.
• Continuing professional development is an integral part of a consultant post.
