Summary
Senior Clinical Fellow in Viral Hepatitis.
The Royal Free London Viral Hepatitis Service provides care to one of the largest cohorts of viral hepatitis patients in the country. With the recent introduction of Emergency Department opt-out testing, the hepatitis B service is growing at a rate of 400 new patients per annum. The Royal Free Hospital is also the hub of the North Central London and Hertfordshire Operational delivery network for the elimination of hepatitis C which now delivers programs for the earlier diagnosis of cirrhosis and liver cancer surveillance in hard-to-reach populations of all liver disease aetiologies across the region.
Highly effective treatments and monitoring for complications of liver disease can only be impactful with sustained patient engagement. The Viral Hepatitis Senior Clinical Fellow will be responsible for developing new strategies to improve engagement in services across community and outpatient settings.
Reporting to the ODN and Viral Hepatitis clinical leads, they will be expected to work predominantly at the Royal Free Hospital but make occasional trips to other partner ODN Trusts and community treatment sites. The post holder will share managerial responsibility over a data collection team and will have the opportunity to learn extensive data analysis skills.
This role will be supported by the ODN Pathway coordinator, ODN Manager, clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and clinical practitioner teams.
The post begins in summer 2024 for a one year fixed-term contract. It would thus provide an ideal opportunity for a specialist trainee, post-MRCP core medical trainee or post-CCT fellow to pursue independent funding for a PhD or MD in the field of hepatology, Public Health, infectious diseases, virology, hepatology and/or health service delivery.
An individualised programme of clinical sessions, research and audit will be agreed with the successful candidates to meet subspecialist interests and training needs in a tertiary hepatology and liver transplant setting. Suitably experienced candidates will be able to participate in the hepatology on-call registrar rota. A thorough understanding of viral hepatitis is required, thus the successful applicant would contribute to outpatient clinical management of patients with viral hepatitis at the Royal Free Liver Unit.

The Sheila Sherlock Innovation Fellow will be responsible for delivering two major quality improvement projects to improve early detection of liver disease and HCC surveillance across the region. This will involve close working with all regional hepatology and radiology leads to formulate agreed standards in HCC surveillance pathways and monitor their continual improvement.
Reporting to the Community Liver Health Checks clinical and project leads, the Fellow will be based at the Royal Free Hospital but expected to visit all 7 partner ODN Trusts and some community diagnostic sites. They will not be expected to visit multiple sites on a single day. The post-holder will share managerial responsibility for a team of three clinician assistants and will be supported by the ODN Manager and clinical nurse specialist (CNS) team.
The post begins in summer 2024 for a one-year fixed-term contract and would suit speciality trainees in gastroenterology and hepatology seeking out-of-programme experience (OOPE) placement with a focus on hepatology leadership and implementing change in the NHS. Suitably experienced candidates will be able to participate in a tertiary centre hepatology on-call and GI bleed registrar rota and have access to subspecialist clinical training opportunities in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
An individualised programme of training in data governance, data analysis and change management at UCL and/or UCLPartners will be arranged with the successful candidate.
The role offers an opportunity to network with hepatology leads across three training regions whist developing skills in clinical guideline formulation, statistical analysis, project management, team supervision and change implementation. This is not a research post but will generate large-volume observational data which could be used as the basis for hypothesis-driven research projects in subsequent years and funding applications thereof.
