Summary

The Centre for Crop and Environmental Sciences (CCES) was established in 2024 and brings together researchers and PhD students from the Soil and Water, Crop Science, Pathology, Entomology and Nematology groups. These groups are focussed on both understanding fundamental processes and translating them to applied solutions to the wide range of challenges regarding soil, water, nutrition, pests and diseases, and how they are affected by climate change and farming systems.

CCES researchers and students utilise specialist facilities, in particular the Jean Jackson Glasshouse but also polytunnels, CE rooms, the Crop Science lab, soil preparation equipment, soil drying room and grain cleaning room. The specialist CCES facilities directly or indirectly support, 30 PhDs, 10-15 final year HRP students, 15-20 MRP students as well as academics and post-doctoral researchers, with research funding from EU, BBSRC, NERC, InnovateUK, Defra, AHDB and commercial companies.

This role is to ensure that the CCES specialist facilities, particularly the Jean Jackson Glasshouse, are well-managed, run and maintained in accordance with best practice. The role also includes providing technical support for staff and student research (undergraduate projects through to postdoctoral research projects). This may include, when appropriate, general assistance with experimentation, data collection and analysis.

Previous experience of working in university and/or commercial laboratories is an essential requirement.
