Summary
Renal Services Band 3 – Health Care Support Worker– ‘Do you want to join a winning team’? Are you ready for a change or a new challenge? – then consider joining a highly specialised Haemodialysis clinical area based at one of our satellite units. Our units in the Coventry & Warwickshire region have provision to treat patients requiring Haemodialysis for Chronic Kidney Disease or Acute Kidney Injury.
Our Main haemodialysis unit is based in at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire – this is a 30 station unit. We also have 4 renal satellite units as follows: Ash Satellite Unit based in Rugby St Cross Hospital – 18 dialysis station unit Lucy Deane Satellite Unit based in the George Eliot Hospital site – 12 dialysis station unit Clay Lane Satellite Unit (near City Centre) – 12 dialysis station unit Whitnash Satellite Unit – 8 dialysis station unit The renal team pride themselves on being a dedicated multi-disciplinary team (MDT) offering patients daily ward rounds and assessment – the MDT team includes the renal medical team, renal dieticians, social workers and a clinical psychologist. Inclusive of a highly trained nursing team – renal patients holistic care needs are met. We have a full-time vacancy for an enthusiastic healthcare assistant to join the team
The unit has 12 dialysis stations where our patients attend with chronic kidney disease requiring dialysis up to 3 times a week. We are situated George Eliot Hospital site and we are located in Nuneaton. We are part of main dialysis unit in University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire . Good verbal and written communication skills and previous experience in a health care setting are essential. It is essential that the successful applicant has achieved NVQ Level 2 in healthcare.
You must be prepared to complete additional renal training/competencies.
You will be required to work rotational shifts. The Lucy Deane Dialysis Unit has the following shift pattern:
Early shift:07:00-15:00
Late shift:14:30-22:30
PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:
1. To carry out the necessary safety checks and equipment checks
2. To line, prime, organize and trouble shoot the dialysis machines (Training on the job)
3. To assist in the organization and structure of appointments and patient allocation.
4. Assist patients to and from the waiting room into the main outpatient unit for their treatment.
5. Carry out stock rotation and replenishment
6. Carry out personal care to those patients in need
7. Adhere to infection control protocols
8. Adhere to correct waste management protocols
9. The removal and correct disposal of Dialysis needles, and the necessary wound care afterwards
10. To accurately take and document observations of patients and to escalate concern to a senior member of staff when needed.
11. The removal of the dialysis lines from the machines and the cleaning of the machines
12. Telephoning transport for patients
13. Being an active and positive member of a team, while able to use initiative and work without direct supervision
14. Participate in the haemodialysis on-call programme as required.
15. To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimize his/her role within the work area.
16. To participate in the training and development of Health Care Assistants, Student Nurses and locum staff on the ward.
17. To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, their families and colleagues
18. To share responsibility for the care and maintenance of all the specialist equipment on the ward.
19. To respect the confidential information, in line with Trust policy Data Protection Act, obtained in the course of work and not disclose this information.
20. To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues and patients
21. Report untoward incidents such as complaints, clinical emergencies, and injury to senior staff
22. Act as a mentor to new Health Care Assistants & HCA Trainees, participating in induction programmes, and on-going development of their practice
23. Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing, care (i.e. washing, mouth care, toileting, manual handling & mobility), recognizing and meeting the specific needs of patients.
24. With indirect supervision, to manage own clinical workload within the given competencies of the post.
25. Participate in the haemodialysis on-call programme as required.
