Summary
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED The post-holder will be working at medical registrar level. Candidates should hold a primary medical qualification, have at least 2 years of experience at the level of core/integrated medical trainee and at least 2 years at higher specialty training level. Evidence of achievement of all core medical training competencies is required. Candidates must hold a full Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at the time of application. Candidates should hold a certificate in Advanced Life Support from the UK Resuscitation Council, or an equivalent. Please also refer to the person specification. DUTIES OF THE POST The post-holder will contribute to inpatient care of gastroenterology and general hepatology patients (predominantly on ward 91 and 92,) gastroenterology outpatient clinics and the middle grade gastroenterology out of hours rota. Some liver transplant patient cover may be included in on-call responsibilities, with appropriate senior support. Training in endoscopy is provided and will be appropriate for the post-holders level of experience. We are not able to provide ERCP or EUS training with this post. Currently inpatient work is organised into 2-week periods. Approximately one third of the time will be spent on inpatient duties which include attending consultant ward rounds (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday,) leading ward rounds on the other days, supervising junior colleagues, participation in the weekly radiology meeting and review of inpatient ward referrals. The amount and location of inpatient work may vary depending on the evolving Covid-19 situation. Outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists under consultant supervision are scheduled during non-ward weeks. Clinics are predominantly general gastroenterology and specialist IBD clinics, but other sub-specialty experience can be included. Some clinics may be conducted by telephone or video. We have a weekly programme of departmental CPD activity. This includes histopathology, radiology and clinical governance meetings. There are plenty of opportunities to develop teaching skills in ward based or more formal settings, including simulation. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY The post holder will work at registrar level and supervise junior staff who are working on a FY1/IMT hybrid junior rota. The on-call rota is resident 12-hour shift. Our admissions are our specialty patients. There is currently no general medicine rota commitment with this post. The consultants operate a 24 hour on-call system and GI bleed rota and look after inpatients in 2-week blocks. TEACHING AND RESEARCH/STUDY AND TRAINING The post-holder will be encouraged to complete an audit or quality improvement project. If desired there are opportunities to work with the Clinical Research Network team and particularly our research nurses, to contribute to existing clinical trials; training in good clinical practice and in trial recruitment is available. The post-holder will be allocated an educational supervisor who will assess the following objectives mid-way and at the end of the post to check attainment: Participate in middle grade out of hours rota with confidence in dealing with acute admissions to gastroenterology and hepatology Attend specialist clinics and related MDT Initiate or further endoscopy training Complete a research or quality improvement project Present a journal article at departmental CME session on at least 2 occasions
